Every gaming system is different in many ways, from specs to features. But what people focus on the most when deciding which console brand to choose are exclusive games. Xbox has Halo, PlayStation has God of War, and Nintendo has Mario.
Each product also has a variety of exclusive titles that help distinguish it from the rest. But exclusive products don't always stay exclusive, especially these days. Some games that seem synonymous with a particular system end up appearing on rival consoles. Here are some notable examples:
Like most early Metal Gear Solid games, the original MGS was a PlayStation exclusive for some time. Even though it was ported to PC a few years after its release, it still maintains its reputation as a PS1 game.
However, 25 years after the game's release, it was finally released on the Xbox system, Xbox Series X|S. It was included in the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol 1 package along with other MGS titles. It wasn't the first MGS game on Xbox, but it still feels strange to see it on a Microsoft system, as the Xbox brand didn't even exist when the game was originally released.
Mass Effect 2 on PlayStation 3
By this point, people are probably familiar with Mass Effect on PlayStation consoles. But when it first happened, it felt strange. The first two games were released on Xbox 360 and PC, which wasn't all that odd since those systems often shared exclusives at the time.
A year after Mass Effect 2 was released in 2010, the game was ported to the PS3. This was very unexpected, as the first Mass Effect game had not yet been released on PlayStation systems. So before ME2's PS3 port, it felt like Mass Effect would always stick to Xbox and PC. However, Sony eventually got its hands on every major Mass Effect game.
Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex on GameCube and Xbox
In the late '90s, PlayStation apparently tried to make Crash Bandicoot a mascot, like Nintendo's Mario. And the first three main Crash games, along with two spin-off games, were PlayStation exclusives. By 2001, Universal acquired the rights to Crash Bandicoot. This means Sony will no longer be releasing games.
So, Sony has now shared the series with its two biggest rivals, as the new game Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex has also been released on GameCube and Xbox. Just a few years ago, when Crash became the face of PlayStation, this felt impossible.
Forza Horizon 5 on PlayStation 5
For a long time, Xbox and PlayStation have had their own racing series. Xbox had Forza and PlayStation had Gran Turismo. Now, the two brands have been sharing Forza since Forza Horizon 5 launched on PlayStation 5 in 2025.
That said, if you like sim racing, your best bet is a PlayStation console that offers both Forza and Gran Turismo. Xbox only has Forza. Because of this, it's surprising that Xbox allowed this to happen to a series they published.
Final Fantasy 11: Xbox 360 Online
Final Fantasy was already a very well-established series before the Xbox even existed. In fact, this series revolutionized RPG gaming. When Xbox arrived on the scene, FF games weren't released right away. Instead, it was still known as the PlayStation series at that point, and some games were also released on PC.
However, four years after Final Fantasy 11: Online was released, it was also released on Xbox, making it the first Final Fantasy to be released on a Microsoft console. At the time, the Xbox and PlayStation console war was in full swing, so it was somewhat of a surprise to see a FF game on the Xbox 360. The series has been released fairly regularly on Xbox consoles since then, but games usually release on PlayStation first.
Horizon Zero Dawn for PC
Xbox and PC often shared games, but PlayStation was once known for being greedier with its exclusives. So it came as a big surprise when Sony's Horizon Zero Dawn was ported to PC in 2020.
Since then, titles like God of War, The Last of Us Part 1, and Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered have come to PC, sparking a trend. And Helldivers 2 was ported to PC and Xbox. So this is a change in attitude for PlayStation and it all started with Horizon Zero Dawn.
Resident Evil 4 Everything
These days, Resident Evil 4 is available on just about every modern console imaginable. But that isn't always the case. It was originally released as a GameCube exclusive, and Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami was adamant that it would remain that way.
He explained that this was due to a lack of faith that Sony and Microsoft would remain in the gaming business. He felt that Nintendo was the game's only future opportunity, so he signed an exclusive deal with the company. So, it was a big shock when it was ported to various systems after being released on PS2. Now people barely remember that it was a GameCube exclusive.
Gears Of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5
When you think of Xbox exclusive series, Gears of War is probably one of the first names that come to mind. Aside from a few PC releases, the series has been synonymous with Xbox.
That is, until Gears of War: Reloaded releases on PlayStation 5 in 2025. This is a remaster of the original Gears of War, so it's very classic Gears. It's always going to feel strange to see a game running on a PlayStation console.
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on GameCube
Long before PlayStation and Xbox competed, Nintendo and Sega were waging a console war in the '80s and '90s. At that point, they were two major console brands, each with their own mascot. Nintendo had Mario, and Sega had Sonic.
However, by the end of 2001, Sega stopped making consoles. So the company ported Sonic Adventure 2 (Sonic Adventure 2: Battle) to the Nintendo GameCube. It was really crazy to see a Sonic game on a Nintendo system at the time. You can now play a variety of Sonic titles on your Nintendo console.
Halo: Campaign Evolved on PlayStation 5
To say that Halo is Xbox's biggest series would be an understatement. These are the games that really put the Xbox brand on the map, especially Halo 2 and Halo 3. Although some games have been available on PC as well, FPS series have always been synonymous with Xbox.
This is why the news that a remake of the original Halo will be released on PS5 is shocking. It's a strange feeling to see Master Chief appear on a system made by Xbox's biggest rival. It's as if the main Mario games were ported to the Xbox Series X|S or PS5.
