Donkey Kong 64's coconut gun turns into a real weapon

There are weapons in video games that can and do exist in the real world, and there are weapons that cannot and do not exist. So far, Coconut Shooter DK's use in Donkey Kong 64 would have definitely fallen into the latter category. Well, it's time to change that. Because coconut shooting records now exist not only on DK Island, but also in the real world.

Someone created a replica of the real DK Coconut Gun that looks exactly like the real thing.

Thank you to the good people at No Bitrate for this. In their latest video, they detailed the four-month process that went into creating a realistic replica of Donkey Kong 64's coconut shooter, or coconut gun.

For those of you unfamiliar with this weapon, it's basically a hollow log that looks like a gun, which DK uses to take down enemies and fire coconuts. Due to the simplicity of the Coconut Shooter, you might think that turning it into an actual weapon would be relatively simple. A video preview documenting No Bitrate's journey outlines why this couldn't be further from the truth.

Despite its name, the Coconut Gun is more of a cannon than a gun. Cannons were historically made of fairly thick metal. Being made of wood means there is a high chance it will explode if used. That's why the creators light the fuse when they run the first test and then run away as fast as possible.

In the full video, which shows how they overcame the obstacle of having their coconut gun be made of wood and not metal, they eventually get to the point where they can hold the shooter in their hand and fire coconuts. The scary part then becomes the damage the launched coconut does to the ballistic dummy.

The puppets are specifically designed to replicate human anatomy and are used to demonstrate how humans are affected in certain situations and, in this case, what would happen to a person if a coconut was launched at full speed. It turned out to be a bad one, with one of the shots obliterating the dummy's head cleanly.

I'll never look at DK the same way again.

Donkey Kong laughs and smashes things to pieces in Donkey Kong Bananza. nintendo

I no longer look at Donkey Kong in the same light. Because I watched the video and found out that he was using lethal force in the name of collecting bananas. It seems a little full. But you can sleep easy knowing that the gun hasn't appeared in any other DK since. Bananza's Donkey Kong is a much milder version of the Nintendo icon and wouldn't even dream of chopping off someone's head by firing a coconut straight into their face.

It goes without saying that you shouldn't try to make your own legendary coconut gun at home. If you want to know what it feels like in your hand, Donkey Kong 64 is now available to play on NSO. Nintendo announced the imminent release to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Harambe's death. It is still impossible to determine whether it was intentional or an accident.
