Metroid as a franchise is in a bit of a tricky place right now. It was quite popular, and while Metroid Prime 4 was relatively well-received, it didn't sell as well as you'd expect from a proper Nintendo blockbuster. This has led many to fear that Nintendo might decide to leave Metroid to gather dust for a while, but fortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case.
A new Metroid game may have been leaked
Earlier today, Twitter user Necrolipe discovered that the Brazilian ratings board may have accidentally leaked the name of a new 2D Metroid game currently in development for the Nintendo Switch 2. The rating has since been removed, but not before people received screenshots to reveal that the game was called Metroid Ravenous.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was never going to be the game you wanted it to be
It turns out that rebooting Metroid Prime 4 is impossible.
Not only that, the game is claimed to be released sometime in 2026. Judging by the fact that this is the first time we're actually hearing about this game, and the criminally small amount of footage we've seen of the Ocarina of Time remake, we can assume we'll be getting another Nintendo Direct later this year, possibly in September.
This is where we'll most likely see an announcement for Metroid Ravenous, if it actually exists. This is pretty solid evidence, and it's worth noting that it's been a few years since the last 2D Metroid game (2021's Metroid Dread), but it's still not official confirmation. It's best to keep your expectations in check until you see what the game is, but seeing as it's expected to release this year, it's probably never too late.
