Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 This is a faithful remake of Star Fox 64. Although known for being a short game, it is a very replayable game as players chase high scores and can find alternative routes through the Lylat system. However, it can be difficult to find out exactly what the unlock requirements are for any path if you don't know how to find alternative paths.
There are certain levels in Star Fox that, if you do them right, give you options on which planet to visit next. If you fail to complete the hidden objectives, you can advance to the next level. If you need a little guidance on what to do in the Star Fox levels that have secret missions to unlock alternate paths, you'll find all of them below, including advice on how to complete the trickier paths.
The missions you need to complete to unlock the alternate path in the Star Fox remake are identical to those in Star Fox 64, so you can use this guide to help you navigate the N64's Lylat system as well.
Corneria
- Rescue Falco and pass through all seven stone arches (Sector Y).
No matter which route you take on your Star Fox journey, everyone starts on the same planet, Corneria. Proceeding through this iconic opening level normally will take you to Meteo.
Instead, you'll be given the option to go to Sector Y next, and to begin what's reputed to be the hardest route in the game, you'll need to eliminate the enemies that come after you when Falco calls for help. Then, when Falco calls for a challenge, you must pass through all seven arches. Check these two boxes and Falco will lead you through the waterfall and into a hidden boss fight. Once completed, the galaxy map will provide branching paths.
meteor
- Pass all 7 energy anomalies (Katina).
If you complete Meteo properly, you'll follow the standard Star Fox route to Fichinat. If you want to mix things up when you get to Meteo, you'll need to get through all seven of the level's energy anomalies. If you think you missed it, don't worry. They don't appear until the end of the level, and then they all appear one after the other.
As long as you don't miss a single thing. These look like orange portals (pictured above), and if you miss one the others will disappear as well, rendering an alternate route to Katina unusable. To make the task at hand even more challenging, the Arwing's speed increases each time you pass through one of the anomalies.
Sector Y
- Get 100 hit points (Aquas).
If you unlock it in Corneria and choose the alternate route, your next port of call will be Sector Y. After that, the alternate route to unlock it is quite simple. It's so simple that you might unlock it without even realizing what criteria you've met.
Because all you have to do in Sector Y is get 100 health points to unlock an alternate route that gives you the option to go to Aquas instead of Katina. With Andross' armies descending on you all at once, there are plenty of opportunities to increase those scores. Ships, projectiles, turrets – take out everything you can. They are all included in the total. Don't forget to lock on to your target so you can take out multiple enemies at once as often as possible.
There is no alternate path to unlock it in Aquas.
Katina
- Knock down the plate (sun) before time runs out.
You can reach Katina by taking the standard route from Sector Y or the alternative route from Meteo. This is the first level of the game that turns an on-rails shooter game into a full range game. You find yourself in a dogfight against an army of enemies, and eventually their mothership, the Saucerer, joins the fight.
To unlock an alternate route out of Katina, you must defeat the saucer before the end of the level. The giant ship's hatches open periodically to release more enemy fighters. When that happens, unleash everything on the open hatch that glows yellow, just like the boss fight's weak point. If you do that before the clock hits zero, you can get to Solar. If the saucer survives, it moves to Sector X.
picina
- Defeat Star Fox (Solar) before time runs out.
Unless you take an alternate route from Corneria or Meteo, Fichina will be the first to encounter any range level. It will also serve as an introduction to Star Fox's villain, Star Wolf. But you won't get there until you've taken the time to figure out how all the range modes work.
Well done too. The objective you need to complete to unlock the alternate route out of Fichina is to defeat Star Fox. This means taking down all four members of the enemy squad before time runs out. If all four members of Star Wolf are defeated before the timer reaches zero, you can visit Solar next. If there are surviving members of the enemy team, they move to Area X.
zone
- Destroy all 36 searchlights without being detected (Z area).
Zoness' alternate route objective is probably the hardest in the entire game. The stages are supposed to be stealth missions, but like any good game with stealth elements, you can completely ignore them if you want. The problem here is that shooting all guns means there are no other paths to take at the end of the level.
Zoness is filled with spotlights. To be exact, there are 36. Not only do you have to destroy every last one to get to Zone Z, but if any of them spot you, it's game over. Well, here's your chance to take an alternative route. Sometimes the spotlight may be on you, so stay low and do your best to let your squad join the fight. Once discovered, it's time to head to Macbeth.
There is a route to Solar via Katina and Fichina, but there is no alternative route out of there. The only place you can go after completing Solar is Macbeth.
Sector X
- Win the boss fight (Macbeth) before Sleepy tries to help.
- Find the hidden wormhole (Sector Z).
Sector That's because there are two locations you can unlock, and a total of three locations can be reached by completing this level.
If you complete Sector That means you have to go to the side to rescue him. However, if you beat the boss quickly enough, Slippy will have no chance to intervene and can turn to Macbeth instead.
There is a third, very different way out of Sector When you see a fork in the middle of the level, go left. Eventually you will see a panel with a blue-white glow. Shoot it enough and you'll unlock a wormhole that provides an alternate route to Sector Z.
Sector Z
- Destroy all 6 Copperhead missiles (Area 6).
There are two ways to get to Zone Z. Destroy all 36 searchlights in Zoness without being detected, or find hidden wormholes in Sector X. Once you get this far, there is only one step left to reach Area 6. Area 6 is the final stop on the way to Venom, which ends in a more difficult confrontation with Andross, and the better ending to the game.
However, unlocking Zone 6 via Zone Z is easier said than done. This level is by far the hardest stage in the game. You must escort the Great Fox through a sea of enemies, while Andross' forces fire massive copperhead missiles at the massive targets you must protect.
In order for the Great Fox to safely pass its opponents, you must knock down all six missiles before they make contact. My advice is to ignore everything else. The crew will repeatedly call for help and follow suit when the missile arrives. This will continue to deal damage until it explodes. Destroy all 6 and you will be taken to Area 6. If one of the missiles touches the Great Fox, the mission is over and you go to Bolse instead.
macbeth
- Shoot all eight rail locks and shoot the rail switch (area 6).
If you haven't found your way to Sector Z, there's still a way to get to Area 6 and play the true ending of Star Fox. But there are several ways to get to Macbeth. This can be done by failing to turn off Zoness's spotlight via Solar, or by defeating the Sector X boss before Slippy can attempt to help.
Macbeth is a Landmaster level, which is a train chase level throughout. Your job is to steer the train off its course. To do this, you need to shoot all eight rail locks and shoot the rail switch at the end. Rail locks are numbered 1 through 8 and turn from red to green when activated. If you miss the lock or the final switch, you will be sent to Bolse after finishing Macbeth.
Titania has no alternate routes to unlock, and neither do Bolse and Area 6.
Venom 2 – The True Ending
- Reach Venom through Area 6 (Venom 2).
To unlock Venom 2 in Star Fox, where you fight the real Andross and experience the game's true ending, you'll need to get through Area 6 and access the final stage. You can do this by destroying all six Copper Head Missiles in Sector Z or hitting all eight rail locks in Macbeth and then hitting the rail switch.
Venom 2 offers a much harder challenge and a more satisfying and definitive ending than what you experience while reaching Venom through Bolse. After defeating all four members of Star Wolf, you will enter the fortress to deal with Andross. This is where Andross' true form is revealed. It's a creepy brain with glowing eyes that aren't visible on regular Venom.
After defeating Andross, you will play a part that is not part of the other ending. Guided by the ghost or memory of Fox's father James McCloud, fly back as the fortress falls around you.
