Resident Evil Requiem is the fastest-selling game in the entire franchise. In less than two months, 7 million units were sold. One of the most highly anticipated titles of the year, Crimson Desert sold a very impressive 6 million copies in less than three months. This is a good achievement considering it is a new IP.
When it comes to a game's historical relevance and all marketing spending, nothing is more powerful than word of mouth and the Internet. That's what one new viral indie sensation just discovered.
Meccha Chameleon, a game developed by just two people in two months, has now surpassed all the biggest titles of 2026, selling 7 million copies in just 12 days.
The Mecha Chameleon could be the biggest viral sensation of 2026, but it's not even close.
Most developers can only dream of their game selling 7 million copies. For context, games like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 failed to hit those numbers despite being on the market much longer. That just shows the scale of Mecha Chameleon's accomplishments.
Created by Lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro, the title was conceived in Fortnite, and the pair played around with various hide-and-seek-style mechanics before deciding on what would eventually become Meccha Chameleon. The game was released on June 10th.
The game went viral on social media platforms like TikTok immediately after its release and sales exploded. Today it surpassed 7 million.
The announcement was shared on the game's Steam page, where the developers stated, “7 million copies sold! Thank you so much! A new official Japanese themed map will be added today or tomorrow.” It was also reported that “further updates are coming tonight.”
Unsurprisingly, these high sales numbers have made Meccha Chameleon one of the most played new games on Steam. According to SteamDB, the number of concurrent players peaked at a whopping 340,534. This is the fifth highest figure for a game this year, behind Slay the Spire 2, Task Bar Hero, Subnautica 2, and Resident Evil Requiem, and is likely to rise.
