There's Bad News About Valve's Steam Controller

Valve has announced that some Steam Controller buyers won't receive their orders until 2027. The company has planned to meet demand for the device, with three expected delivery windows for the new Steam Controller.

After many rumors, the Steam Controller reveal was exciting news for PC gamers. Gamers who reserved their peripherals early were in luck. That's because many gamers have already received their controllers. However, the continued demand for this device has now led to a new announcement from Valve.

Valve Announces Delays in Current and Future Steam Controller Orders

Valve shared an announcement about Steam Controller reservations, explaining that due to extreme demand, they wanted to manage expectations for its arrival. Valve plans to continue making devices, but when comparing demand to the number of devices it expects to be able to produce, it expects only a portion of its existing orders to ship in the second half of the year. Three ordering windows have been announced: September 2026, December 2026, and 2027, but there are no details on when that will occur next year. Those who have already reserved can check which launch window they are assigned to on their Steam Controller page. The earlier customers reserve a controller, the earlier they will be admitted. Orders placed after June 18th are expected to arrive before 2027, and Valve will provide updates as it narrows the timeline further.

The second Steam Controller was announced 10 years after the release of the original, which was discontinued in 2019. Unfortunately, its reveal alongside the new Steam Machine and the first Steam Frame VR headset arguably couldn't have come at a worse time. Valve's previous releases, such as Steam Deck, were also in high demand. But Valve now has to deal with the crisis the entire gaming industry is experiencing due to the proliferation of AI data centers, which will require massive supplies of chips and processors to keep them running. As a result, we're faced with shortages and rising prices for all kinds of gaming hardware, and Valve hasn't been immune to this trend.

Die-hard Steam Controller fans will likely be disappointed to learn this, but they're still the lucky ones when it comes to the new release. The entire hardware line was expected to be released in early 2026, but due to the aforementioned demand for parts, the new Steam Machine and Steam Frame are not yet available for reservations or pre-orders. Valve has stated that both Steam Machine and Steam Frame will release in the summer of 2026, but this may change. The price of the device has also not yet been confirmed by Valve officials, making it even more worrying for those looking to purchase it as soon as possible.

Fans may be tired of waiting, but the good news is that Valve hasn't announced any plans to cancel the launch of any of the three Steam hardware releases entirely. For now, all gamers can do is wait for Valve to announce further details. Luckily, considering the high prices of computer components, the prices of Steam Machines and Steam Frames aren't all that outrageous.
