The success of Ghost of Yotei is undeniable. Despite attempted (and failed) boycotts, the game outsold Madden and College Football on PS5 last year, comfortably outselling its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, in its early days of release.
Now, thanks to Alinea Analytics, we can take a closer look at the sales numbers, and it's clear that compared to other first-party PlayStation titles released over the past 12 months, the game's sales have been stellar.
Ghost Of Yotei boasts incredibly impressive first year sales figures.
Ghost of Yotei has now sold 4.8 million units, generating nearly $350 million in revenue for PlayStation, according to a new report from Alinea Analytics. The average play time is around 47.7 hours, with 7% of players playing for over 100 hours.
According to the report, the game generated almost as much revenue from copies sold on PS5 as Assassin's Creed Shadows did on PS5, Xbox, and Steam, and the game was released more than six months early.
Compare it to other PlayStation exclusives released in the past 12 months and you'll see how Yotei shines.
Death Stranding 2, the only game comparable in size and budget to Ghost of Yotei, has sold 1.7 million copies on PS5, or about a third of Yotei's total sales. MLB The Show 26 is the third best-selling exclusive game with 745,000 units, while Saros is fourth with 406,000 units. However, the game has only been out for about six weeks.
In addition to highlighting Ghost of Yotei's success, the report also shines a light on Marathon's poor PlayStation performance. On March 24, it was reported that Bungie's extraction shooter had sold only 217,000 copies on PlayStation. Nearly three months later, that number stands at 347,000, meaning only 130,000 copies were sold in three months.
Marathon was controversial, with fans believing it killed all hopes for Destiny 3, and sales clearly didn't help the struggling developers. It has already gone through a major restructuring over the past few years (see layoffs), and is reportedly preparing for more.
Ghost of Yotei's sales will likely be crushed by the September release of Insomniac's Wolverine later this year.
