FF7 Revelation Recreates Menu Portraits from the Original Game

As revealed in a recent gameplay showcase, the character portraits in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation are actually recreations of menu icons from the original Final Fantasy 7.

The Summer Game Fest reveal of Revelation, the long-awaited final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, was a monumental moment that showed just how much was already revealed about the game. We saw Highwind in action, Cid and Vincent's unique fighting styles, a new class system with awesome outfits, and more.

But as you can imagine, the gameplay footage shown as part of the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation reveal hides a ton of details that the community has been steadily revealing over the past few days. One minor detail that has already been discovered and is a fan favorite involves the game's character portraits that pay homage to the original game.

Sid's cigarettes were sadly left in the past.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's gameplay showcase revealed a few photos of the game's menus, which have been slightly updated since Rebirth. As Twitter user Azezazel pointed out, one very neat detail is that the new character portraits shown in the menu are actually direct recreations of the icons that appeared in the original Final Fantasy 7.

Rebirth and Remake both had circular portraits with unique party scenes, but Revelation changed the design to show more of the characters in the same poses as in FF7. Cloud is glaring at the camera, Tifa is smiling with her head turned to the side, and Cait Sith is waving at her Moogle.

It's a cute detail that's a little heartbreaking when you realize there's clearly a missing space right underneath Cait Sith. I'm making this an intentional choice to constantly remind the team of who they've lost. Depression aside, it's nice to see Square Enix taking the opportunity to pay homage to FF7 more directly, as (almost) the whole gang is here.
