It's been 13 years since a Sly Cooper game was released on PlayStation. Sure, Sony has brought the original trilogy to modern hardware through its PlayStation Classics program, but Thieves in Time is the last “new” experience, and it was on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
Sucker Punch has kept the spirit of the franchise alive by including references, costumes, and other elements in other titles, most recently PlayStation 5's Ghost of Yotei.

The spirit of Cunning Cooper is alive and well in Ghost of Yotei
Tanuki's ghost.
However, some fans are convinced that Sly Cooper's return is imminent. The evidence they have is rather compelling, and considering Sony has set a bigger PlayStation State of Play for tomorrow (Tuesday, June 2), it's worth looking into.
Are the former Sanzaru developers hiding something?
Earlier this year, Sanzaru Games, the team behind Thieves in Time and the studio that released a remake of the original Jak & Daxter title, another fan-favorite PlayStation franchise and one that has yet to receive a new entry, was shut down by Meta.
However, within a few weeks, the former developers started their own studio called Sneaky Devil Studios.
“The team at Sneaky Devil Studios brings decades of experience across all gaming mediums, from the genre-defining Wrath of Asgard VR to standout action-adventure classics like Sly Cooper and Sonic the Hedgehog,” said Matt Kraemer, chief creative officer at the time. “Now we're going back to our roots with a focus on console and PC platforms. The team at Crafty is hard at work creating something new.”
That studio name is where fans believe Sly Cooper is working in some capacity. As the Sly Cooper subreddit points out, the name is a direct reference to a line in Sly 3 in which Bentley calls Sly a “secret devil.”
At one point, Sly Cooper's voice responded to Kraemer on LinkedIn, and in a since-deleted reply, Kraemer said they should work together again with a winking emoji.
It doesn't help that recent reports suggest Sony is looking at ways to resurrect and leverage old, unused IP. That specific rumor follows a report that inFamous was working on it, but the general idea could apply to a variety of franchises, from Killzone to SOCOM to Ape Escape.
Ultimately, time will tell, but had there been a better time, State of Play would have made much more sense.
