Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally getting its long-awaited physical release later this year, as confirmed by Fangamer earlier this week. It comes with a physical disc, manual, and a cool fold-out map showing the entire world of the game. This is another great way to support Team Cherry, but some fans feel that this announcement gave away more details about Sea of Sorrow.
Silksong fans believe the physicality hints at the Ocean of Sorrows release period.
If you access the Fan Gamer website and the pre-order page for Hollow Knight: Silk Song, you will find a sentence that is currently making fans excited. “The Sea of Sorrow DLC is not included with the game media, but is available for download for free,” it says.
Now, if you're a Silksong fan, you're probably thinking of this as an acknowledgment that Sea of Sorrow will be out and playable when the game's physical release drops on October 16th, but the DLC won't be on the disc due to manufacturing and all that other jazz. If you're an optimist, this is basically an announcement that Sea Of Sorrow will be released in the next five months.
Half-Empty Silksong fans will probably read this more as a warning to potential customers that the DLC won't be on disk, and that the “free to download” statement warns fans that the DLC is free and can be downloaded whenever it's released before or after the actual release.
It's a bit strange to me. I'm sure Sea of Sorrow will be released within the next 5 months. That's because it's quite strange for Team Cherry to spend an entire year on one DLC when they usually only invest a few months on it. Hollow Knight's first DLC arrived less than six months after the base game launched, and for Silksong, that time has already passed.
I think there's a chance we'll hear about Sea of Sorrow at Summer Game Fest next month and then see a release like what happened with the base game a few weeks later. It would be strange to release a physical version and not include Sea of Sorrows if it were ready, so my money is on July or August.
