Mina the Hollower became the highest-rated game of the year this week in a race where the lead has already changed hands more times than I can count. While we're excited for Mina to score this high, another indie game released this week has gone almost unnoticed as it achieved the same high score.
Anything Mina can do, Schrödinger's Call can also do.
Mina debuted with a score of 92 on OpenCritic, but as more reviews were posted, this score rose to an even more impressive 93. That's better than Forza Horizon 6, the previous frontrunner for the best-reviewed game of 2026, and has a higher average score than 007 First Light, which took a storm with reviewers.
However, it does not score higher than Schrödinger's Call. Schrodinger's Call is a visual novel released earlier this week by developer Acrobatic Chirimenjako, and currently has a score of 93 on OpenCritic, putting it in the same league as Mina.

Second release of Record Player Count by Mina The Hollower Smashed Shovel Knight
There are already more people playing Mina on Steam than playing Shovel Knight.
Well, that's technically not true. Schrödinger's Call has a 93, but it appears to be a slightly lower 93 than Mina. At least that's what OpenCritic's rankings suggest, as Mina still tops the list of top-rated games of 2026, with Schrodinger's Call right behind it.
This may be because OpenCritic's average scores are rounded to the nearest whole number when displayed on the site. The actual average will be a decimal point in any description. That said, even though it's only a close second to Mina, Schrodinger's Call is within touching distance of the Shovel Knight sequel that many of us have been waiting years for.
How long can Schrödinger's call take with Mina?
There is one caveat, this is the number of reviews for each game. Mina the Hollower has 59 reviews to its name, while Schrodinger's Call has 10 reviews. The more reviews a game has and the higher its score, the more impressive it is. A glowing first review of Schrodinger's Call is likely to land on a lot of radars, which means you'll get more reviews in the future. This could mean your score goes up as more people discover it and fall in love with it, or it could go down as more people who aren't into visual novels check it out and don't understand why all the fuss is made.
The premise of Schrödinger's Call is intriguing and, on the surface, somewhat heartbreaking. You are Maria, the last friend in the world. Your mission is to answer calls made in those brief moments between life and death. Listen to what they have to say about their lives and regrets and decide how to respond. If its unique premise is executed well, we could see Schrödinger's Call maintain its high scores even as more reviews are published.
