Plus he was a phenomenal Haki user. Moreover, he is the only being allowed to oppose the Holy Knights.

Sengoku is a Marine known for his combat tactics and skilled leadership. He ensured that the Marines won the Marineford War against the Whitebeard Pirates. He is also a very capable fighter, having served as a lieutenant general during the Rocks era. His devil fruit is the mythical Zoan, which allows him to transform into a golden fire with attack power comparable to Whitebeard's Kuraguranomi. Not much is known about his powers, but Roger states that only Grap and Sengoku can stand against him and his crew. This made Sengoku one of the few people the Pirate King respected for his power.
