Even Kaioken x20 and Spirit Bomb aren't enough to close the gap against Frieza. Honestly, it's a miracle that Goku beat Frieza. At any point, Frieza could have easily killed Goku. Goku put up an incredible fight and proved himself to be a great strategist, but Frieza was playing with him the whole time. Without the Super Saiyan, Goku's journey would have ended on Namek forever.
