Rockstar was hacked over the weekend, and after the studio rejected the hacking group's demands, the sensitive data the hackers obtained was shared online as promised. Among that data is an analysis of where people continue to play GTA Online, which found that more of you are still actively playing it on the latest generation of hardware than on the latest Xbox consoles.

According to the leaked data (thanks, videotech): GTA Online has over 1.8 million weekly active users on PS4.. A weekly active user is probably someone who logs in and plays more than once a week. It's great that so many people are still doing that on a console that was technically replaced nearly six years ago.

The damning part about Xbox is that the active player base of GTA Online on PS4 still far exceeds the number of people playing on Xbox One, as well as the Xbox Series X and S, the newest consoles. Xbox Series consoles have just over 1.1 million active users.While these might sound impressive numbers in isolation, they may actually be a bit worrying for Xbox when compared to the PS4 numbers and the upcoming GTA 6 numbers.

However, the latest generation of Xbox consoles is not the platform with the fewest GTA players. No, unwanted rewards go to the PC. On PC, there are still less than a million people who regularly play the latest GTA games. This shows why Rockstar doesn't care about releasing GTA 6 on PC at the same time as the console release. The PC version will be released later, but the release date is still expected to be around 2027.

Of course, it is still the best platform for those who play GTA Online. Nearly 3.5 million PS5 users continue to log in at least once a week. The analysis shows that despite recent PlayStation price increases, GTA 6 will be a system seller for the PS5 when it launches later this year.

It's unclear what will happen to GTA Online once GTA 6 is released. According to leaked data, apart from GTA 5, Rockstar is generating its own revenue, bringing in around $8.5 million per week. It's not a machine you'll want to pause while Rockstar prepares the next iteration of GTA Online. Either there needs to be an evolution of what currently exists, or there needs to be a seamless transition so none of those players are lost.

This means that if GTA lags behind previous-gen platforms by shutting down the current version of GTA Online when GTA 6 releases or migrating from PS4 and Xbox One, some of its two million players may not want or be able to afford to buy a newer-gen console to continue playing.
