How Video Games Helped Me Cope with Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms

2026 is the best year to quit smoking, vaping, dipping or consuming tobacco/nicotine products. There are dozens of reasons to quit smoking. But I'm not your mom, and I'm certainly not your doctor, and I'm not here to judge whether you're here for potential advice, out of a morbid curiosity with no intention of quitting, or if you're actively smoking now. As someone who has been into it for 15 long years, I fully understand that I cannot quit. But I recently decided to quit, completely for my own reasons.

I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. I'm sharing a personal anecdote, and I hope it helps if you find value in it. If not, ugh.

I expected the first 2-3 days to be the worst, but mid-week was the hardest day. I quit cold turkey when I bought my last Copenhagen roll, knowing that was the end of it. I am still actively engaging in nicotine withdrawal as of this writing, but headaches are delaying the publication of this article. Most headaches aren't that bad, except they're a 2 to 3/10 on the pain scale and last only a few minutes. The habitual feeling that something is missing in your mouth is annoying, but the worst thing was a degree of separation that I could never have predicted. Everything seemed wrong or wrong and for a few days I felt like I was on the left side. I didn't know such a thing was possible, and it made me even more annoyed (and I'm already an annoying person). Anyway, it's safe to say that I'm going through it, as all the cool kids do.

So cold turkey, no patch, no nothing. I did what I always did. I played video games with the intention of ignoring the ongoing withdrawal symptoms. Hopefully the symptoms will go away in the next few days or weeks, but I can relate to my personal experience using video games to cope with these physical symptoms. But the first thing to note is that video games alone don't help with everything. For example, the desire to put something in the mouth has always been treated with sunflower seeds, peppermint or chewing gum. Actually, I can't chew video games.

Look for the grind, not the vibe

  • Cozy games may not be the answer

  • Avoid video games that require a lot of “downtime”

I purchased a Nintendo Switch 2. Pocopia As of a few weeks ago, I'm still actively trying to decorate biomes, finalize my Pokedex, etc. Or at least I thought. The problem is Pocopia How passive many things are and the amount of downtime (or preparing for downtime) doesn't match my current level of patience. Time travel helped a little, but it wasn't something I really wanted to do. As I will explain again, downtime or the feeling that time is approaching has been shown to worsen withdrawal symptoms. The same goes for games like: life is strange.

i played Life is Strange: Reunion I decided to quit the night before release and play the whole game. life is strange game after that. Oh, the problem is that exploration and heavy cutscenes give you room to retreat. I'm finishing this marathon at a more uneven pace than expected, but I don't think cozy or slow-paced games are actually the best way to go through withdrawal.

Pokemon Fan Design New Regional Variants Larvae and Their Evolutions

What helped me the most was kind of grinding. i was playing Pokemon HeartGold The decision-heavy turn-based combat on my 3DS does a lot to keep my mind elsewhere. What really helped was wandering around looking for Larvitar in the Safari Zone. I don't know whose decision it was to make it this difficult, but thank you. I spent nearly five hours repeating encounters and trying to catch one, and those five hours gave me all the escape I needed.

Speed it up!

It's probably closely related to finding the right game. However, I have found that fast-paced multiplayer games are a huge help. it helps Apex Legends It has changed a lot over the years. Because it feels familiar, yet feels completely different. Me and my friends decided to play this game again a few years later, and that was probably what helped me the most. By far the worst time for symptoms to typically appear is mid to late afternoon, which is usually when I'm connected to video games anyway. So getting that across right helped a lot.

Fit 9 games into the grid.

I find that the social aspect of multiplayer games helps alleviate my symptoms significantly. At least my friend, because he himself is essentially one big distraction. I haven't tried co-op to see if it would help, but it logically fills a similar niche. But what makes it Apex Legends The dopamine hit from the knock/kill/win is really great here. Nicotine withdrawal taught me just how much 10+ years of imbibing had affected me chemically, but this moment is just a tiny stimulant that I know I've become dependent on.

Nicotine withdrawal is platform agnostic

Since I stopped dipping, I've played the game on PC, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5. No matter which platform I used, my symptoms were somewhat consistent. It makes sense since my PS5 and Series X are in the same position as me. Maybe the real console war was on our heads the whole time. Playing your Nintendo console (always on hand) wherever you go doesn't seem to have much of an impact. And the only place/time I can say the symptoms were worse than other platforms is PC. Because I keep the roll on my desk (always within reach). So this feels like a common area issue rather than a platform issue.

The worst symptoms seem to have disappeared now. I have persistent headaches and sometimes I touch the phantom limb/log. And while dealing with nicotine withdrawal through video games isn't something I plan on repeating in the future, I thought it was very interesting to see what I absorbed and what didn't.
