State of Decay 3 According to the studio head at Undead Labs, it wasn't in development when the first trailer came out. It's been eight years since the last zombie survival game was released, and six years since the third game was announced. Now fans have some understanding as to why there was such a long wait. it turns out State of Decay 3 I haven't been actively involved in the work for as long as it seems.
After a long wait since its first release, State of Decay 3 You'll finally be able to play it soon, with the closed alpha releasing in May 2026. It's not yet clear when the game will fully release, but it likely won't be until 2026 as some previously thought. Fans may be hungry for a release date, but it's encouraging to see things progressing after such a long period of relative silence, and as more information continues to trickle in, it's easy to see why things have been so slow.
Xbox Games Showcase Officially Confirmed Via Bonus Direct
The Xbox Games Showcase will air in June 2026 with major reveals, followed by the Gears of War: E-Day Direct and updates on future Xbox games.
The State of Decay 3 lead said he “really didn't have a game” when the reveal trailer came out.
Philip Holt, Head of Undead Labs, recently sat down with Sunny Games to discuss. State of Decay 3 When the first trailer was released, it was revealed that “the game was in a Word document.” Fans fell in love at first sight State of Decay 3 In a 2020 teaser from that year's Xbox Games Showcase. At the time, the game was believed to be one of the first Xbox Series X titles given the timing of its announcement, but according to Holt, proper work on the title hadn't even begun at that point. Since there were only “four or five people” on the team, the pre-rendered trailer was more of a showcase of early concepts than a reflection of actual gameplay.
This topic came up as Holt explained that there would be no zombie deer in the game, despite that being one of the biggest takeaways fans took from the original trailer. The more teasers come out, the more State of Decay 3's zombie animals were nowhere to be seen, and now Holt has confirmed that the idea has been scrapped. Once Undead Labs began development in earnest and got deeper into actually testing and executing their ideas, several things featured in the trailer had to change. Holt reassured fans that some of the elements from the early preview will make it into the final build, but zombie animals won't be one of them.
This new information also makes it easier to understand why there was such a long gap between the announcement and further updates. There were four years between the first. State of Decay 3 There was a trailer and a second one, because there was nothing to show until the first release was already released. Most of Undead Labs was still focused on updates. State of Decay 2 It's likely that real progress on the third teaser didn't begin until after the first teaser was released, as more developers could have been brought on board to begin the actual programming, design, and writing at that time.

It may seem strange to release a game trailer before any actual work, but it's not uncommon in today's industry. Many games like GTA 6 and cyberpunk 2077 It is announced before full-scale work begins because it is necessary to attract investor interest in the fund development. Undead Lab and State of Decay 3 It may not be quite the same scale as these major titles and studios, but it still needs to create buzz. Now that Undead Labs is part of Microsoft, there may be additional pressure to build something much bigger than previous games, which will require additional resources. Whatever the case, the long wait is understandable, and fortunately, it may soon be over.
