“World War Hulks” is a 2010 storyline that saw many existing heroes gain gamma monster variants, but it's a Marvel event that Daredevil missed out on. That means his new look marks the first time in 62 years of storytelling that he's turned green.

Marvel's What if…? The comic will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026, and to celebrate, artists are sharing a variety of covers featuring bold concepts worthy of their namesake. Issue #3 of Stephanie Phillips' promising new book is where Hulkdevil comes into play. Hulk Devil not only sports the Hulk's trademark green skin, but also a venomous tongue and curved green horns. However, aspects of Daredevil's traditional appearance are present, including a red eye mask reminiscent of the “Man in Black” suit, hands that are a nod to Battlin' Jack Murdock, and a giant red billy club befitting the monster. The Daredevil-Hulk hybrid can also be seen running along the wall of a skyscraper, which suggests he's still pretty agile, although it's hard to imagine him being as stealthy as Matt Murdock.

Unfortunately, no problem is perfect. What if…? Because variant covers from other comics are all fans have to go with to keep up with this awesome design. But there's still reason to hope that Hulkdevil could end up being something more. First of all, as ScreenRant highlights, the New Champions team was introduced via variant covers before they got a proper comic, so perhaps Daredevil Hulk will follow a similar path. Daredevil also has one of the most impressive comic book legacies of any character, and while he has few bad runs to his name, he has plenty of classics to boast about. So, with readers always wanting more Daredevil comics, perhaps people will look to see a miniseries exploring versions of the character in these variant covers.

In June, Marvel creators will imagine what Cyclops' life would be like if he were with Madelyne Pryor and address what would happen if Thor had the Symbiote instead of Spider-Man. July imagines the original Ultimate universe if it survived. secret warWhat would have happened if Jessica Jones had been bitten by a radioactive spider, or if Kraven had survived the final hunt. Finally, the August issue finds Captain America unraveling in 2099, the Runaways never living up to their name, and Cassandra Nova killing Charles Xavier.

The MCU TV series is divisive because it focuses on Captain Carter, and there were some really weird ideas suggested in the books, such as The Thing being blue instead of orange. But it's still nice to see Marvel celebrating this for everyone who likes to ask questions. A giant green Daredevil sounds strange on paper, but it makes more sense when you look back at his origins, and artist Netho Diaz truly knocked it out of the park with his interpretation. Whether Hulkdevil remains a one-off or becomes a proper character later, it's not every day that something truly new is done with a character that's over 60 years old, and that boldness is absolutely worth highlighting.
