French gaming company Nacon is in crisis. After filing for bankruptcy last month, it is now taking steps to correct course, and one of those steps is to try to sell one of its developers.
Spiders, the RPG developer best known for the GreedFall series and Steelrising, is now accepting offers for two weeks only. As reported in French media, Nacon has until April 14 to find a buyer, otherwise the future of the Spiders and its various games is uncertain.
Nacon is trying to sell Spiders just a few weeks after the last game's release.
As Xboxygen reports, Nacon has publicly shared its interest in selling the Spider. In the listing, Nacon said Spiders has 74 employees, which is probably the number since the studio suffered layoffs last year.
Spiders released its latest game, GreedFall: The Dying World, earlier this month. While it doesn't seem to have been as wildly popular as the first GreedFall, it's a very solid RPG that improves on many of the first game's systems, at least in my opinion. Although the combat changes from the first game may have turned off some fans, it's worth checking out, especially if you're a fan of games like Dragon Age: Origins.
Reviews from both fans and critics alike were a bit weak this time around, but hopefully someone will see the potential in this series. If nothing else, the world-building has always been great, so it would be a real shame if it were wasted.
The worst part about all of this is that the Spiders seem to have been through a lot over the past few years. Following layoffs last year, the club went on strike in 2024 over wages and working conditions. During this time, GreedFall: The Dying World was in early access and disappointed returning fans with combat changes. The developers have made it clear that this will not change, but improvements have been made prior to release.
When the team went on strike, they mentioned that they had another project in the works along with GreedFall: The Dying World. This may be put on hold until this issue is resolved.
All we can do right now is wait and see if Nacon gets an offer for the Spiders. Presumably, the acquisition will include Spiders' IP and proprietary engine. It is unclear what the future holds for the team if a buyer is not found in time.
