Added Wii support to RetroAchievements

Ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2 release, there were high hopes that Nintendo would finally add some variation of trophy/achievement support to the console, allowing users to record wins in the same way as on Xbox and PlayStation.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have some sort of list of objectives to complete, but the fact remains that Nintendo consoles still have no trophies or achievements, for better or worse.

Bill Trinen, vice president of player and product experience, said “no” when asked at the time if Switch 2 would finally include this feature.

Nintendo is right to reject the achievement.

Switch 2 focuses on actual gaming.

Then don't worry about it. RetroAchievements saved Nintendo the trouble and added support for the Wii, Nintendo's seventh generation console, which is now officially 20 years old.

The end result is a ton of digital milestones you can unlock in some of the Wii's best games.

“Wii is excited to welcome you to our largest launch ever with over 180 sets! RetroAchievements is proud to announce support for our 53rd console, Nintendo Wii!” the forum wrote in a post.

It's been two years since its last major release, which happened to be the GameCube, and the Wii is now supported with over 180 sets available on the popular online platform.

The set includes everything from Donkey Kong Barrel Blast to Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and even Mario Kart Wii.

“This makes Mii very happy,” one user replied.

Already, users are acquiring RetroAchievements left and right, and no doubt more games will be added to the list. Being a community-driven platform, it may take some time, but the fact that there are over 180 sets available, including some of the Wii's most iconic games, is a testament to that community.

Wii is retro.

If the 20th anniversary wasn't enough to tell you, let the BBC tell you that the Wii is a retro console that's hard to stomach.

It's ripe for inclusion on platforms like RetroAchievements, but that doesn't stop the pain of knowing that we're officially old enough to remember what it was like to get a Wii for Christmas.

If it's any consolation, GameStop recently “declared” that the Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360 are all considered retro consoles for purposes of the trade-in program. Considering that the PlayStation 4 is inching towards its 13th anniversary, or 10th anniversary, it won't be long before we start hearing nostalgia for Sony's 8th generation console.

Excuse me, but I'm going to go buy a wand.
