final fantasy 9
A timeless adventure filled with references
final fantasy 9 Released in 2000, it's almost surprising to think how well it's held up. As the game's 25th anniversary passed without official confirmation of a remake, some fans actually concluded that a remake might simply not be necessary. Later re-releases added much improved character models, and although the pre-rendered backgrounds were retained, the level of detail is still impressive. More importantly, the story of Zidane and his colleagues fighting the conflict spreading throughout Gaia cannot be left out.
The game was created to bring the spirit of the classic series into the modern era of 2000. The medieval fantasy aesthetic, airships, and strict assignment of certain abilities to certain characters (only your beloved Black Mage Vivi can use Fire, for example) all apply here. It's often cited as a must-play for anyone interested in JRPGs, but the slow pace of its turn-based combat may be a point of contention for those more accustomed to action games.

final fantasy 16
The latest and perhaps most action-packed entry in the series.
Naturally, some people may want to start with the most recent mainline game in a particular series without having to play them in numerical order. In this case final fantasy 16It was first released as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in 2023, before being released on other systems the following year. In terms of presentation, it's a great action RPG, with the fantastic music the series is famous for, some of the biggest set pieces, and some of the most mature and shocking moments we've ever seen.
The 9 Most Influential Final Fantasy Games (Rank)
Final Fantasy is one of the biggest gaming franchises, and it contains some of the most influential games ever made.
The game's world, Valistea, is embroiled in a devastating war and a spreading plague called the Blight. In the midst of all this, protagonist Clive Rothfield, once positioned to become the next ruler of Rosaria, finds his destiny and understanding of himself shattered by the attack on his kingdom and its consequences. The title follows the latest Final Fantasy trend of action-based combat, where Clive can command various moves from the game's Eikons (summons). If the slow turn-based combat of the classic games turned you off from the series, rest assured that you'll get the exact opposite here. At the same time, there is also special equipment available for those who find the timing of attacks, blocks, and dodges difficult. A great mainline series entry.

final fantasy
The original game, perhaps in a more player-friendly format.
You don't have to play the game chronologically, but it's perfectly fine to start from the beginning. text final fantasy The game was first released in North America in 1990, three years after its Japanese debut. So it's unfair to expect it to hold up very well in the NES format. But that doesn't mean you can't start. Just as Final Fantasy 16's action through turn-based combat will be a big selling point for some players, the opposite will likely prove true for others. However, many fans would suggest picking up the Pixel Remaster of the first mainline game (pictured here).
This version made significant changes to exploration, level grinding, and how magic worked, while also giving players more freedom with the save system. Not all players have embraced all of these changes, but they certainly make the game more accessible to newcomers. The elements of this first story – the Warriors of Light, their quest to destroy the Four Elemental Demons, the class classes, and most importantly the Crystals – have been cornerstones of the series for decades, and this is probably the best way to experience the debut adventure.

final fantasy 7
A classic that started talking to many people
Whether you've ever played the game yourself or not, you'll probably notice this: final fantasy 7 It was the first experience of the series for many gamers outside of Japan. This title sparked a lifelong love for the series (and JRPGs more broadly) for many of us. The cast has become iconic, the Materia system remains one of the neatest and most beloved means of character customization in the genre, and its central themes of tragic humanity and its resource-draining impact on the Earth are more relevant than ever.

In addition to Final Fantasy 7 and its remake, Tifa has also appeared in several spinoff Final Fantasy titles.
There are some rite of passage games that are always recommended as essential experiences, and this game is one of them. The story of Shinra and ultimately the battle for the planet against Sephiroth is filled with can't-miss moments and truly heartbreaking scenes. Of course, all this has to do with the original version of the game. Because the much-acclaimed remake project offers a completely different way to experience the adventure. While the original's plot may change a lot despite the fast-paced action RPG combat, it's also a great interpretation, and may be more palatable to those who find the original classic too jarring for modern tastes. Nonetheless, for some, it's an iconic RPG that hasn't yet reached the top tier.

final fantasy 10
The end of the Final Fantasy era, but nonetheless a great starting point
The original PlayStation saw some of the best releases in the series. final fantasy 7, 8, and 9. The latter was released quite late in the system's lifespan and, like its predecessor on the PS1, did a lot to attract new fans of the series. If that's the case, then the debut on Sony's next console was truly spectacular, that's for sure.
final fantasy 10 It was a transformative game. Some newcomers to the series may find simply reading dialogue boxes a bit primitive, and there have been games here that have introduced voice acting. It also implements turn-based combat, but the possibility of character swapping during combat is much more dynamic than before. The way Tidus and his party traverse Spira also changed without the classic world map. All of this gave the title a more cinematic and powerful quality, but without overlooking the importance of adjusting your character's stats and abilities (in this case via the Sphere Grid). An incredible game for its time and one that still boasts a stunning HD remaster. More than that, it's a moving and utterly compelling story about the threat of Sin, Yuna's important journey, the loyal friends who walk with her, and protagonist Tidus' journey from Blitzball ace to hero. One of the best stories in a Final Fantasy game. Speaking of Blitzball, it's really a minigame!
