in Pokemon Firered and LeafgreenTrainers can travel to Cinnabar Island as soon as they unlock the ability to use HM03 Surf outside of combat. To get there, trainers can sail straight south of Pallet Town or surf south to Fuchsia City via Routes 19 and 20 and then via the Seafoam Islands to Cinnabar Island.

There are two ways to get to Cinnabar Island. Pokemon Firered and Leafgreen:

  • Palette Town → National Route 21 → Jinsa Island

  • Husha City → National Highway 19 → National Highway 20 (East) → Haepo Island → National Highway 20 (West) → Jinsa Island

Both routes to Cinnabar Island require the use of HM03 Surf, which can be found in the Safari Zone. Surfing can only be used outside of combat after the trainer defeats Koga at the Fuchsia Gym and earns the Soul Badge.

Palette Town Route

  • Use HM02 Fly to go to Pallet Town.

  • Start surfing with the HM03 Surf in the southern waterways of town.

  • Swim straight south along Route 21 until you reach Cinnabar Island, landing just behind the Pokemon Mansion.

Fuchsia city route

  • From the Magenta City Pokémon Center, head south towards the start of Line 19.

  • HM03 Use Surf to swim south in a straight line until the path turns left.

  • Head west via Route 20 (east) past the trainer until you eventually reach the eastern entrance to the Seafoam Islands.

  • By exploring the cave, you will eventually be able to come out on the other side via the western exit on Seafoam Islands.

  • Surf straight west via Route 20 (West) and you'll land on Cinnabar Island, right next to the gym.

Despite its small size, Cinnabar Island has a lot to do.

  • pokemon mansion: Explore the large building next to the Jinsa Gymnasium and find useful items such as TM 14 Blizzard, TM 22 Solar Beam, Rare Candy, Moonstone, and Secret Key.
  • Jinsa Gymnasium: Use the secret key (found in the Pokemon Mansion) to open the door to the Cinnabar Gym and fight Blaine. Defeating Blaine will grant you access to Sevii Island.
  • Pokemon Lab: At the Pokémon Lab, you can exchange Raichu for Electrode, Venonat for Tangela, and Ponyta for Thread. Movement Tutors can teach Pokémon the Movement Metronome. The scientist in the last room has the ability to resurrect the fossils, transforming Helix Fossil, Dome Fossil, and Old Amber into Omanyte, Kabuto, and Aerodactyl respectively.
