Starfield won't end when Free Lanes and Terran Armada arrive in the game on April 7th. That means the simultaneous PS5 launch, long rumored and finally confirmed, won't be the final chapter in Bethesda's space journey. I think it's a safe bet that the majority of the studio's hard-working personnel are attached to The Elder Scrolls 6, but there will still be some interesting news about a game that composer Inon Zur is sure will soon make him more likeable overall.
Lead Creative Producer Timothy Lamb is not happy about people dubbing next month's update “Starfield 2.0,” and who can blame him when Todd Howard himself says otherwise? But he has a huge tease for his fans.
Love, Hate, Indifference and Deep Space
Starfield didn't exactly unite Bethesda's new and old fans when it launched in 2023. Sure, Fallout 4 has already created quite a craze in some corners (I'm not a fan of it myself), but that game seems to continue to outsell and be played more than the space epic that debuted about seven years later. Not to mention Skyrim… yes. The king of long-term commercial payouts, that is.
Even after 20 years, Final Fantasy 12 still feels strangely ahead of its time.
One of Final Fantasy's most divisive entries is almost old enough to drink.
However, there's no reason to bet that a large-scale conversion is on the way, but people who like Starfield (I enjoy it to some degree) should check out the Free Lanes update and the $9.99 USD Terran Armada DLC. Perhaps on the shiny PlayStation 5. I plan to do that. But as Wccftech reported in a conversation with Timothy Lamb, the producer made a great point about the “2.0” talk being a “narrative.”
“No, I'm against it. There's an inherent narrative to what that label means. We looked at a number of systems that we were interested in or heard from the community and tried to level up many of them. Free Lanes is huge, and it was important to make sure it worked with all the existing content we released at launch. But we wouldn't call it 2.0. A lot of the systems were incrementally improved. We added a ton of content. It's the best version. From Starfield.” -Timothy Lamb
But what about the future I mentioned? Lamb quickly confirmed that Wccfetch's queries were moving in the right direction. There's more along the way:
“There's nothing to announce today, but there's more to the story, things the team is excited about, things we still want to pursue. We're still working on Starfield.”
“There's more to the story” sounds to me like the team wants to incorporate as many of Starfield's world-building steps as possible before turning off the proverbial engine, no matter how slimmed down two and a half years in the release rearview mirror. Does this mean future expansion? maybe. Maybe not. Personally, my thoughts are on the latter. The Elder Scrolls 6 is about to become a huge money maker, and uh, Bethesda certainly knows it. But what happens if additional fees, such as free lanes, continue to arise? Especially if it's free? Of course. I love games.
