Fortnite's SpongeBob Sidekick will soon cost more than Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Epic is increasing the price of V-Bucks in Fortnite, and this means a few things. First of all, the currency of live service games will become more expensive. This is natural. The changes also mean you will no longer be able to earn enough V-Bucks through the Battle Pass to unlock next season's Battle Pass. Among other things, this means that one Fortnite SpongeBob is now more expensive than one Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Keeping track of virtual currency changes and how they may affect you can be tricky. That's the whole point. Companies like Epic know that you're much more likely to spend your money on in-game items if you have to convert it into virtual currency first. Not only does that make your spending feel less “realistic,” but once the money is there, you have no option to spend it elsewhere.

Fortnite SpongeBob will cost more than $20 after price increase

SpongeBob-SquarePants

That's why when price increases like this happen, it's easier to understand and understand the whole situation when you compare the new price of the item in the game in question to the item outside of the game. This is where SpongeBob comes into play. As cuzl2 analyzes on Twitter, $8.99 will give you 800 V-Bucks instead of 1,000, making the price of 100 V-Bucks a little more than $1.12.

Fortnite's SpongeBob sidekick, the officially licensed version of the character that follows you around during matches, still costs 1,800 V-Bucks. That means, according to cuzl2's calculations, when the new V-Bucks price starts next week on March 19th. SpongeBob sidekick costs $20.16.At $16.18, that's how much it costs to buy the little guy right now. For the record, it's already hard to understand and I love Fortnite.

The cost of 100 V-Bucks is slightly more than $1.12 when not rounded to the nearest penny, so it's actually $20.22.

As of March 19, Fortnite SpongeBob will officially cost more than Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Framing it in a way that might help people get their heads around Fortnite's price increase because the numbers don't feel real, instead of washing it all out, means having a little SpongeBob following you around in Fortnite from March 19th costing more than Hollow Knight: Silksong.

What would you spend $20 on?

To be clear, Silksong is not for sale. This article is not about V-Bucks expiring when the price rises next week. Silksong launched at $19.99, a high bet ever, with a lot of money on the line. It's a Game of the Year contender that you can easily sink dozens of hours into. Given the choice between that and SpongeBob's sidekick, I know which I would choose. But while Epic is struggling for cash after raising $6 billion last year and is forced to charge more for V-Bucks “to help pay the bills,” Silksong developer Team Cherry is an indie studio confident it couldn't use a little extra money. But what do I know?
