Ballistic Moon, the UK-based studio responsible for the 2024 Until Dawn remake, has officially disbanded, just seven years after its founding and two years after releasing its first and only game. The information is according to the final gazette submission in February.
The move, first reported by Insider Gaming, is essentially a formality with the UK government. That's because the studio was “effectively shut down” for a time following mass layoffs that occurred shortly after Until Dawn was released.
Until the amazing remake of Dawn first releases on October 4, 2024. But even before the title was released, the studio suffered layoffs. About 40 people were laid off at the time, and the remaining staff stayed on to provide post-launch support for the yet-to-be-released remake.
Sony thinks Until Dawn is worth a lot more than it actually is.
The film adaptation debuted at No. 5 at the box office last weekend.
Those employees didn't last long; by December they were laid off, leaving 20 other developers without their jobs. At the time, Insider Gaming reported that Ballistic Moon's owners were actively seeking funding and pitching projects, but without success. The studio was reportedly “effectively closed” in March 2025, and appears to exist in name only.
Fast-forward to 2026 and Final Gazette has been granted a voluntary cancellation, ending the studio having only released one title. It was created by a former Supermassive Games developer and has reportedly been acquired by Sony.
Until the Dawn remake wasn't a blockbuster
Ahead of the remake's release, it was criticized by fans for being a full-price release, something many took issue with, considering the original still played well and didn't. that It's dated compared to other modern remakes.
So it didn't help that the game looked worse than the original in some ways, which only led to more criticism. The title received “mixed” reviews on Steam, but eventually overcame them to receive a “very positive” rating.
As for Steam, concurrent players peaked at 2,607, and on PlayStation consoles it reportedly had a worse launch than the much-maligned Concord. Despite teasing a sequel, Until Dawn Remake seems to have done little to convince fans to get involved with the horror franchise.
In addition to the remake, a live-action movie was also released, but it failed to be as successful at the box office as the video game of the same name. It received middling reviews and did not set the box office on fire. The end result is a studio that unfortunately no longer exists.
