Battlefield 6 was one of the biggest games to come out in 2025, heralding success that would finally take on the juggernaut that is Call of Duty. This was seen as a true comeback for the Battlefield series, and things were only going to get better from now on, but just five months after launch, EA decided to lay off employees at several Battlefield studios.
This is according to IGN, who claimed that studios like Criterion, Dice, Ripple Effect, and Motive Studios were all affected. It's not yet known exactly how many people have been laid off, but affected individuals are reportedly being told that the layoffs are due to a “reorganization” across the Battlefield studio. All of these studios are open, but many roles have been hit.
Battlefield 6 had the best launch of the series.
All of this despite Battlefield 6 performing absurdly well for EA when it first launched, selling a whopping 7 million copies in just a few days and selling twice as many units in each opening week as its closest competitor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. In many ways, Battlefield 6 was a huge success for EA.
Battlefield 6 Season 2 Preview – Cool New Maps and New Toys
The new Battlefield 6 maps are really great, but it's still a little disappointing after a long wait.
Unfortunately, these layoffs are probably due to the rapid decline in Battlefield 6's popularity since the game's release. A combination of issues, including seemingly AI-generated content, broken updates, and lackluster seasons, caused Battlefield 6's player numbers to fall off a cliff, while games like Baldur's Gate 3's player numbers rose even higher. It's still averaging around 60,000-70,000 players per day, but it's nowhere near the peak of 747,440 players it collected at launch.
EA had hoped that the release of Season 2 would help revive interest in Battlefield 6, as new seasons do with almost all of their games, but it's now clear that it hasn't received the resurgence that EA had hoped for. Now it appears the publisher is downsizing, and hopefully those affected will soon be able to find work elsewhere.
