6. Attack on Titan Characters Need a Better Ending

attack on titan It is also known to have a beautiful yet extremely cruel world where characters are often crushed by fate. But as the series reached its peak, not all of its most iconic arcs received the ending they deserved. Instead of a poetic ending, we were left with benched queens and an unexpected off-screen ending that left fans wanting more.

The conclusion was great, but it failed in some areas and left a lot of disappointment to fans. Here are some of the characters who were left out, rushed, or became footnotes after seasons of incredible growth.

Flock and Jaegerist in Attack on Titan

Whether you love him or hate him, Floch was the only one who told Eren exactly what would have happened if he had not been able to continue his mission. He devoted every moment of his life to the survival of his people, and although he may have died a villain to many, he fought for a cause he truly believed was the only means of saving his homeland. During the series, Floch was the character with the second-best character development after Eren himself.

To his countrymen, he was a true hero. It was a journey from a fearful recruit willing to disobey orders to a cool-headed and decisive leader who would stick to his ideals until his last breath. Where others wavered and hesitated to take sides, Floch never wavered, and his desperate and lonely death at the hands of Mikasa was bittersweet for someone who had been right about the cycle of hatred all along.

Ymir (Scout)

Ymir

Ymir's death is one of the biggest assumptions in the show. Because she is literally removed from the narrative by an off-screen flashback. She rescues Reiner and Bertholdt and is taken to Marley, where she is consumed to travel to the Jaw Titan. It was a colossal waste of a man who still had a lot of life left to live and no desire to die on behalf of a country that had treated him cruelly his whole life.

Marley could have turned her into a murder weapon, but she could have stayed in Paradis and kept Historia safe, but she died on behalf of a nation that owed her nothing. Her departure is more of a convenient means of changing her behavior than a conclusion to her fiercely independent nature and love for Historia.

Erwin Smith

Erwin Smith from Attack on Titan (2)

The irony of Erwin Smith's story is that he died just steps away in the basement. The very truth he had desperately tried to obtain his entire life. He dragged hundreds of people to their deaths, gave up his humanity to the truth, and died just before the secrets of the world were understood. The ultimate epic heartbreak is dying in the dirt, just a few streets away from the answers to his life's questions.

His final commands are legendary, but his fans still wonder what such a genius man could have done with his knowledge of the outside world. He should have seen the sea and the crypt with his own eyes, and not been the ghost that has forced the Scouts to make all the difficult choices ever since.

Hange Joy

Attack on Titan-Final-Chapter-Special-1-Levi-Hanji

Hange has been the heart and brain of the Scouts since Erwin's death, but her sacrifice during the finale seemed forced by the story. She went out in a blaze of glory and fought the Colossal Titan, and many fans believed the scene was set up to force Armin into the commander position. The danger of Hange remaining behind to delay did not seem insurmountable at that particular moment.

For a character who had overcome all impossible odds and lived through science and curiosity, the simple charge of suicide seemed like a tenuous outlet. Hange should have had a chance to witness a world outside of war, as she was one of the few people interested in the biology and wonders of Titans rather than killing them.

Ymir Fritz (founder)

Ymir Fritz from Attack on Titan (2)

One of the most controversial aspects of the entire finale was the reveal that Ymir was still a slave to the Paths because she loved King Fritz despite him never treating her like a human. Following thousands of years of suffering and her children devouring her own flesh, having her motivations boil down to forced toxic attachment due to Stockholm Syndrome felt like a superficial explanation for such a cosmic tragedy.

Besides waiting for Mikasa to reveal how to “let go,” she needed to give her a resolution that emphasized restoring her belonging and humanity. Her story was one of passive suffering until the end, and as a being as powerful as a god, many fans were led to believe that they never really saw the true nature of her being.

I may be an enemy of humanity, but I am your friend, Eren. I can't be a good girl and I don't want to be a god. But when I see someone crying about not being needed, I want to tell them that's not true. — Historia Reiss

Historia Lace

Attack on Titan - Historia - Lead - Eldia - Again

The anime finale was fantastic, but it left a lot to be desired when it came to Historia Reiss, who turned out to be virtually non-existent in the series finale. She was no longer queen, and nothing related to her pregnancy, husband or child was made public. What was the point of her child? Considered so important that she was completely ignored, she ended up being a background character with a mute and confusing pregnancy subplot.

Historia Special

Attack on Titan: Why Historia is one of the most underrated characters in the series.

Attack on Titan built Historia's character beautifully, but by the end of the series it had left her unrelatable, leaving many questions unanswered.

Historia was a character based on the reality of life for herself, but she ended the series as a political figure with nothing to say in the final conflict or in any of her roles. For a woman who rebelled against her father and the literal God of the Wall, being a silent footnote during the series' most important hour was a huge disservice to her entire journey.
