Just stick to what's in the game and you don't have to worry about anything else. However, you'll be missing out on one of the best aspects of Skyrim: Mods. Yeah, it's really no surprise that the community has put together so many great companion mods.

Generic follower mods to consider installing
This article will mainly focus on custom characters, but first I'll include a short section with some common follower mods that may be useful to have. This isn't necessarily game-changing, but it does make the process of existing in Skyrim a little more enjoyable.
Can be looted by Follower Framework or Followers of the Nether
I'm listing both of these mods because they are both useful and can provide similar functionality, but if someone is looking for a comprehensive yet resource-friendly download, I'd recommend Nether's Follower Framework. Skyrim's colleagues. NFF allows you to have 10 companions at once, along with many QOL adjustments and general features.
Followers Can Loot is a pretty old mod at this point, but it could still be useful by adding the option to have your company loot corpses. Talking to them will give you a variety of dialogue options to determine what type of loot they will get. This works for all default followers in the basic version. Skyrim Special EditionSupports unlimited follower mode where players can have as many companions as they want. NFF covers this area, so there is no need to install an FCL if you have the former.

A true Nordic companion
If players felt like vanilla Housecarls were just placeholders for real Nord muscles with personality, Bjorn is your guy. This bearded tank was designed from the ground up to complement two-handed melee builds. Bjorn uses his own voice pack appropriate to the story, his idle banter is wisely limited, and he avoids the repetitive chatter that plagues lesser mods.
He provides an important quest chain, and if the player completes it, they will be rewarded with a lifelong friend (or lover). Overall, Bjorn has enough personality to stay relevant after hours, thanks to over 4,200 voice lines.

Malryn's thoughtful commentary on the various quests enhances the vanilla experience without overwhelming the player with boring chatter.

Gore is a standalone follower with hundreds of lines of fully voiced custom dialogue, a detailed storyline with multiple lengthy quests, and custom commands unique to the character. Players can also instruct Gore to camp, hunt, and cook, with details changing depending on the region. This is an independent feature that does not conflict with dedicated survival modes such as Campfire and Simple Hunting Overhaul.
The campsite set by Gore changes and evolves as the quest progresses and the story unfolds. It's an immersive way to create a bond between players and Gore.
