Freeren: Beyond the end of the journey It is a beautiful story that explores the beauty of human emotions and the overlap of time. The anime is currently in its second season, and the third episode finally saw Stark make a direct romantic move toward Fern!
Fern and Stark have long been hinted at as a future couple. Despite being close friends, one is quietly looking forward to it, while the other is too tight-knit to realize it. So why are they suddenly dating in an upcoming episode of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End?
Frieren posted record-breaking numbers amid the hype for Season 2.
After receiving prestigious awards, it marked the series' critical and commercial success and set a new all-time highest sales record.
Fern and Stark's slow-burning romance
how they met
The two first met in episode 5. To defeat the Solar Dragon, Freeren and Fern encountered Stark, who was “protecting” the village from the dragon. At first, Fern saw Stark as a coward, but after seeing his determination, she decided to trust him. They worked together to defeat the Solar Dragon, and Stark began his journey with them. Later in season 2, episode 1, Wirbel tried to convince Stark to join his party. However, Stark refused and later told Fern that he really enjoyed traveling with them. He also added that Fern's words when they first met especially encouraged him to make that choice.
romantic interest partner
By the time Frieren and the others reached Graf Granat's domain, Stark and Fern had already shown really good teamwork. In episodes 8 and 9, Frieren teams up with Lugner to defeat a demon named Linie while they go to take down Aura the Guillotine. But at this point, they only seem to be good colleagues who trust each other.
In episode 12, Fern hears about his whereabouts from various people he helped when searching for Stark on his birthday. This leaves a lasting impression on her. This is also the first time the show acknowledges Fern's growing feelings for Stark. However, this appreciation came to an abrupt halt when he discovered that Stark was making childish jokes about the shapes of clouds. On his way back, Stark shares his past, which helps him come to terms with it better. He also receives a bracelet from Fern as a birthday present.
Soon after, in episode 14, Fern gets upset because she forgot to buy Stark something for his birthday. Before he can explain himself, she continues to be harsh with him, which upsets him and causes them to argue. They later reconcile and Stark expresses that he hasn't received her gift yet because he wanted to go buy it together. He chooses a mirror lotus bracelet without realizing that it signifies eternal love.

Opposite reactions from Fern and Stark
Even from a distance, the personality differences between Fern and Stark are clear. Although Fern is mature and able to read her surroundings well, she is unable to actively express her true feelings. Stark is childish and speaks his mind honestly, but he is also so dense that he cannot understand the people around him. Fern's growing interest in Stark is noticeable throughout. In Episode 14, Stark was surprised to learn the meaning of the bracelet he received as a gift. He claims not to know its true meaning and even suggests replacing it. Fern is angry, not because of the romantic meaning behind the bracelet, but because she proposed replacing something that took time and effort.
I didn't think you knew what you were doing. The design is a lotus flower reflected in a mirror. The language of flowers means ‘eternal love.’ In this area, people give gifts to their lovers. — Sein, Episode 14
In episode 15, Stark briefly holds her hand, but even after he leaves, Fern continues to look at the hand she just held. Again, it means she's starting to see Stark differently. They even dance beautifully together later in the episode.
Events leading up to the date
As Season 2 began, direct references to the romance between the two began. In the first episode itself, Stark confesses that, contrary to Frieren's beliefs, he was not forced into the party. Instead, he joined because he was persuaded by Fern's faith in him so he could kill the Solar Dragon. In the same episode, Fern reminisces about the time she was running away from a large monster in the Magic-Nullifying Crystal Den. While running away from the monster, she held onto the bracelet that Stark had gifted her. Before going to bed at night, she kept looking at the bracelet with a smile, indicating that it was important to her.
Stark asks Fern, but he didn't mean to.
In the third episode of season 2, Stark and Fern stay in Heiß for a few days while Frieren takes a long-awaited soak in the hot springs. While debating what to do next, Stark decides to visit a weapons shop. But Fern objects and says, “Pay attention to me.” Stark once again doesn't understand and suggests a date just to tease her. But surprisingly, Fern accepts immediately.
Fern mistakes her for being upset when she panics and quickly leaves the room. He asks Frieren for advice. The two take a walk around town and discover things that Fern might like. She starts by suggesting that Stark get something to eat at the market, since he's likely to get irritable when he's hungry. Next, we look at an exhibition hall filled with pretty props and end the date in a quiet square. Stark applauds Frieren for understanding Fern, but she declines because she only remembered what Heiter taught her.
Later, Fern tries to ask Frieren for advice as well. However, she gives up when she realizes how poor her master's knowledge about relationships is. The episode ends with a sleepless Fern staring at the moon. This could mean she's restless as she waits for the next day, but it could also signify the romantic message the moon holds.
Frieren's next episode will finally see the two main characters date. Will their relationship proceed smoothly, or will it end badly?
The latest season of Frieren is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
