Ser Harrold Westerling is built as a loyal and morally upstanding character, a stark contrast to many in the Red Keep. After succeeding Ser Ryam as Lord Commander, he placed pressure on the King and his council to quickly find a successor in the Kingsguard, emphasizing his active involvement and command. He improved the affairs of the Kingsguard and even invited suitable candidates to court, one of whom was Ser Criston Cole.
However, Westerling lost control of the Kingsguard following the Greens' coup in King's Landing. He was visibly shocked when Otto Hightower demanded that he kill Rhaenyra. Westerling walked away dramatically, bringing his arc to an unsatisfying end. This depiction stands in sharp contrast to the book, which simply succeeds Cole after his death. House of the Dragon It gave him a lot of power by keeping him alive much longer, but ultimately wrote him off without any meaningful reward.

Hugh's sophisticated portrayal in the show fire and bloodAnd this change will have a butterfly effect throughout the story. This is especially true in the Two Betrayers plot, where he and Ulf defect to the Greens during the First Battle of Tumbleton. Yes, Aegon II doesn't deserve to take the throne, but the show further complicates this by repeatedly making him look like an arrogant idiot that his own brother wants to get rid of.

Rhaenyra Targaryen is not that ruthless. House of the Dragon Like she was in a book. She repeatedly ponders the possibility of war, to the point where, in a misguided move, she sneaks into King's Landing to negotiate peace with Alicent. The effects of Rhaenyra's conflicting arcs, baffling character writing, and lack of resolve can be felt throughout Season 2.
