While Divinity almost certainly won the award for most creative reveal at this year's edition of The Game Awards, the most unexpected reveal given that there's a giant statue in the middle of the desert will almost certainly be Mega Man: Dual Override, the first truly new Mega Man title in a long time.
As it turns out, the reveal didn't happen overnight. Rather, as Geoff Keighley revealed on social media, it was the result of months of planning that began when Capcom contacted Keighley directly to ask for something to happen at one of his events.
According to Keighley's lengthy post, the reveal framework began a few days after the Summer Game Fest when he received a package from Capcom containing a ton of Mega Man merchandise and a message that reveal time had come.
“For years, I’ve asked Ryozo Tsujimoto and the Capcom team when it was time to bring back the Blue Bomber,” Keighley wrote. “He always said they were experimenting and waiting for the right path. That box was a signal. They were ready.”
Mega Man 5 for Game Boy has been added to Switch Online, and everyone needs to play it.
Mega Man 5 is an original game that not many people have played. Now is your chance to take a look at this hidden gem.
From there, Keighley went to Japan to play an early version of the game and discuss how best to release it to the world.
Between Capcom and Keighley, the duo finally revealed their twelfth title, Dual Override, after deciding on an orchestral reveal that included references to every other Mega Man game.
The end result is exactly as Keighley described, with the music swelling and leading into the trailer for Dual Override. In previous releases the stage color was blue, but this was changed to avoid giving up.
“This is how Mega Man came to TGA this year,” Keighley concluded.
Dual Override will be a dream come true for Mega Man fans.
After Dual Overide was revealed, a Mega Man insider revealed that the game would originally be called Mega Man 12. This can be seen by looking at the structure of the trailer. But more importantly, this is one of several “key projects” celebrating the 40th anniversary.
Elsewhere, it was hinted that Bass' voice actor could return for a “new game”. We've already heard Proto Man's whistle at the end of Dual Override's trailer, so including Bass would be another treat.
If that wasn't enough, Capcom revived its iconic Robot Master design contest, asking fans to submit their designs for a Robot Master with “giant suction arms” to Twitter. It's X. Sure, the Dual Override might not be released until 2027, but the hype train has officially left the station.
