Although it was leaked right before the show, one of the biggest reveals of The Game Awards 2025 is the return of Lara Croft in not one, but two new Tomb Raider titles.
Legacy of Atlantis is a reimagining of the 1999 classic, while Catalyst is set in northern India a few years after Tomb Raider: Underworld and will showcase the next steps taken by the legendary archaeologist.
While the announcement was well-received by many in the gaming community, one of the series' original creators expressed concern. Now, speaking with TheGamer, new Lara Croft actress Alix Witon Regan (Cyberpunk 2077, Dragon Age: Inquisition) has moved to allay any concerns they might have.
The new Lara Croft isn't worried about the new game being “another remake/remaster/reimagining.”
Tomb Raider co-creator Paul Douglas expressed his concerns about Croft's return on his BlueSky account. “It looks like she’s back.” he said “Personally, I'd rather explore new lost worlds than remake/remaster/re-imagine what we created under intense pressure in the '90s. Fingers crossed.”
I hope Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis can give kids the experience I had playing Tomb Raider.
I want my children to meet Lara Croft, whom I first discovered in 1996.
In a two-part interview with TheGamer in which Wilton Regan first discussed the pain of Perfect Dark's cancellation, the actor responded to Douglas' comments. “Please let me know in a year,” she said with a laugh. Her words may have been seen as inflammatory, but there was no malice behind them, and Wilton Regan seemed confident in herself and what Amazon and Crystal Dynamics were creating.
Please get back to me in a year with your comments.
She says it would be “counterproductive” to spend too much time focusing on previous iterations while playing the game to help her Croft understand where she fits into the canon of its predecessors. Instead, she said her work was “a very, very cool and original reinterpretation of Lara Croft.”
The full interview with Wilton Regan will be broadcast live on Christmas Eve. Here, the star discusses how different Croft is from his other roles, the pressure of playing a gaming icon, and what fans can expect from Tomb Raider's new era.
