Frustration with the season's animation and overall quality reached a boiling point with episode 6, titled “Motley Heroes”, which currently stands as the worst animated episode of all time on IMDb. One Punch Man Season 3 is breaking records, but not the ones you might expect.
The 6th episode initially scored 3.4 points after it was broadcast. It's not great by any means, but it's a bit more in line with the performance of other Season 3 episodes. But things quickly began to deteriorate, with the rating dropping to 2.0 and then to 1.6 just a few days later. Episode 11 of The Promised Neverland Season 2 set the record for worst animated episode with a 2.9 rating. “Motley Heroes” currently has a 1.4 rating based on approximately 19,000 ratings.
Clearly, fans aren't happy with the direction the series is going. Before Episode 6 was released, Season 3's average IMDb rating was 3.9, which is still terrible compared to Season 1's 8.7 average rating and Season 2's 8.1 average rating. Season 2 was criticized for its pacing and animation when it aired, but did not suffer the same backlash as Season 3. It's clear that there are issues with the latest season, and fans are voicing their displeasure one way or another.
The series' latest episode, “Counterstrike,” isn't doing much better, currently sitting at a 2.5 rating based on around 5,100 ratings. At this rate, there's a chance that one of the final episodes of the season will break the record set in Episode 6. Even though it almost tripled its average viewership, it's likely that Episode 6 review-bombed people to jump on the hate train surrounding the new season. So while a season 3 episode may never get below a 2.0 rating again, it's safe to assume that the rest of the season will continue to get terrible scores.
Season 3 was embroiled in controversy from the start.
Things haven't been going well since season 3. Last September, fans were already delighted with a teaser trailer. This led Season 3 director Shinpei Nagai to issue a statement saying that Season 3 “probably won't measure up to Season 1,” which didn't give much confidence to an already anxious fan base. A little over a month later, Nagai left social media due to the harassment. Nagai and the rest of the staff in charge of Season 3 were constantly criticized for their animation work. It's fair to criticize someone's work and express dissatisfaction with the way the series is being handled, but some fans are taking this too far.

Bandai Namco may see this as a profitable series, but the quality of the product and fan response do not bode well for the franchise going forward. There's no word yet on whether the series will get a fourth season, but it's hard to imagine what will happen anytime soon. There was a four-year gap between seasons 1 and 2. It took six years for season 3 to come out, and now fans may have to wait even longer, even if they don't get anything.

I hope that the series, its fans, and everyone who worked hard on this season can look forward to better things to come in the future.
