  • That said, if a series revolves around a relationship but isn't your typical romance, we'll take that into account.

  • Most of these animations are intentionally dark, but there are also some that are unintentionally dark.

  • Although their quality is not relevant to this discussion, most of these dark romance anime It's worth watching.

Written by Mark Sammut on November 13, 2025: The fall 2025 season is well underway, and if you're looking for a romance anime with a sinister twist, the lineup has some pretty good options. I added this series to my recommendations, and it's a rare example of an intentionally dark girl's anime.

This monster wants to eat me

a monster love story

Well, here's an anime with a strong premise. The scent of hinako seems to attract yokai, and everyone wants to eat here. Fortunately, she was saved from a watery grave by the mermaid Shiori. Unfortunately, the latter's actions are driven entirely by the desire to consume Hinako, but she wants to wait until the girl is at her best. In the meantime, she will protect Hinako whether she wants to or not.

This monster wants to eat me Girls love anime, even though it offers a very unusual take on romance. In his own twisted way, Shiori loves Hinako with every fiber of his being. Conversely, Hinako slowly begins to feel something for the killer. Because Shiori is the only one who recognizes Hinako's depression and promises her escape through death.

Trash's Wish

Trash's Wish This is an underrated romance anime with mature themes and a story that explores love and lust. The series has a wonderfully crafted story, as well as realistic characters who may not be sympathetic, but feel real. The story tells the story of two high school students, Mugi and Hanabi, a seemingly perfect young couple.

But no one around them knows that they are secretly missing someone. Trash's Wish's story is more than just a fake romance anime because it offers an in-depth examination of the complexities of unrequited love, lust, jealousy, relationships and how people can turn destructive and selfish when they feel lonely.

I want to escape from princess lessons

Welcome to Stockholm

To enjoy a fantasy romance anime, you have to suspend disbelief to some degree. Because a lot of them revolve around not-so-good relationships. Even if they feature questionable power dynamics, most shows minimize the importance of those elements, making it relatively easy for viewers to go with the flow and accept that they're watching something to escape reality. However, sometimes this may not be possible.

I want to escape from princess lessons This is a story about Leticia, a girl who is held captive by Prince Clark. She spends the first half of the series escaping and regaining her freedom/life over the years within the context of the show. Unfortunately, she is always drawn to Clark, who increasingly breaks her spirit. About ten years later, Leticia falls in love with her kidnapper.

To be clear, this is not the subtext of the story, but the actual plot, and it's all structured like a light romantic comedy. The animation is neither a deconstruction of this type of narrative, nor is it darkly comical, and Leticia's fate is presented as a positive one.

Yakuza Fiance: Raise and Tannin Gai Yi

Love, Obsession and Yakuza

Yakuza Fiance: Raise and Tannin Gai Yi This is a clear example of an anime built on a relationship that undoubtedly wants to raise red flags. Yoshino, the granddaughter of a mafia boss, is forced to become the fiancée of Kirishima, another heir to a powerful family. She wants nothing to do with this violent thug, but she has to stay with him for a year.

At first, Kirishima thought Yoshino was boring, but after challenging him directly, things changed. From then on, he becomes almost obsessed with his reluctant fiancé. Despite Kirishima's fairly frequent gestures, there's nothing particularly romantic about this relationship. Except perhaps for the fact that they are often dragged into dangerous situations due to their connections to the Yakuza.

schooltime

Proof that being in a love triangle can have fatal consequences

There are many love triangles in the anime world, schooltime Here's one of the deadliest. Makoto dates many girls, thinking he is just 'gaining experience' for his true love, Kotonoha. However, he left behind a trail of broken hearts, one of whom happened to be his classmate Sekai. She became obsessed with him and tried everything to keep Makoto alone with her, but he didn't want to because he was dating Kotonoha.

Happy Sugar Life

move

Ryosuke Shibuya, Fumihiro Ueno

Ah, one of the most famous dark romance anime, Happy Sugar Life It may have its flaws, but damn is it so fascinating. Sato becomes completely obsessed with a girl named Shio, to the point where he wants to become part of her world. Occasionally leaning into horror territory, the series seeks to feature overtly dark and almost exclusively unlikable characters. However, Shio is an exception. Sato may be extremely dangerous, but he is also incredibly charismatic and enigmatic.

Happy Sugar Life is essentially a mystery thriller, so I would recommend it because ignoring the story completely is half the fun. That said, the animation is heavy, visceral, and uncomfortable, so it's definitely not suitable for younger viewers looking for a traditionally entertaining twisted love anime.

Kurozuka

A vampire searches for her long-lost lover.

Kuro is a young swordsman running away from his older brother who wants him dead. He and his servant Benkei seek refuge in the forest and encounter the mysterious Kuromitsu. She offers them shelter but warns them not to enter her room. Kuro learns that Kuromitsu is a vampire who is eating dead soldiers. Kuro devotes his life to her, transforming him into a vampire, but Benkei betrays and beheads him before the transformation is complete. Kuro wakes up in modern Japan and sets out to find Kuromitsu and seek revenge.

A dark and twisted vampire love story filled with betrayal and blood. There's no shortage of action and violence, as well as complex characters. It's a far cry from your typical vampire romance, and also has some sci-fi elements to make it visually appealing.

Can the friendship between a boy and a girl last?

cunning childhood friend

Well, this came out of nowhere. During the first two episodes, Can the friendship between a boy and a girl last? It comes across as a by-the-numbers rom-com with a love triangle hook. Himari and Yuu are childhood friends, and the former has a habit of teasing the latter about taking things to the next level. But when Yuu's first crush, Rion, appears, Himari is forced to reconsider what she wants from a relationship.

On paper, this premise seems to suggest an anime comprised of mostly fluffy content, but something unexpected happens. Himari becomes really unlikable. From episode 3 onwards, she becomes possessive, using her insecurities as an excuse to manipulate Yuu, threatening to move to another city and making Yuu feel guilty. Considering she jokingly flirts with him for the opening two episodes, her change in attitude suggests she sees her friend as a backup option she can use when she doesn't have anything better to do. Can the friendship between a boy and a girl last? We end up introducing several more terrible characters later in the story, and by the end of the series Himari's brother becomes the only likable character.

Wolf Girl and Black Prince

The ultimate toxic relationship romance anime

There are a lot of romance shoujo manga and anime that tell the stories of bad boys and the girls who like them. my little monster, Itazrana Kissand Maid It's a popular show with a polarizing male lead, but it's at least balanced out by a female protagonist who isn't a complete doormat. Wolf Girl and Black Prince It takes this classic dynamic to its darkest end while still maintaining a light romantic comedy tone.

Erika, who desperately wants to be loved at school, lies that she has a boyfriend, but accidentally points the finger at her idol-like classmate Kyoya. While Kyouya agrees to go along with the ruse, he demands that Erika be his pet and treats her accordingly. Naturally, she falls in love with him almost immediately. A core relationship built on threats disguised as goodwill. Wolf Girl and Black Prince It may seem like it's supposed to be about a toxic relationship, but the story doesn't truly address the couple's terrible power imbalance. While Erika follows Kyouya around like a love-struck puppy, the latter begins to treat her a little better when other men start showing interest in her.

orange

The girl must choose between losing her friends or her future.

Her future self says her regrets center around new transfer student Kakeru Naruse. But Naho must choose whether to save Kakeru from a devastating event or lose her future family if she saves her friend Hiroto Suwa.

orange It may seem like a typical time travel romance, but it has a pretty dark tone to it. Naho and Hiroto must make decisions that affect not only their future, but that of their best friends. It's a pretty heavy thing to carry in your mind at a young age. Especially knowing that your future self is having children.
