PlayStation has released its latest financial report, which tracks console and software sales through September 30, 2025, confirming that the PS5 has sold 84.2 million units over its current lifespan. This puts the latest PlayStation console in the top 10 best-selling consoles of all time.
Total PS5 sales remained at 80.3 million units before today's update added nearly 4 million more units to the console overall. These additional sales not only move it up to 9th place overall, but also mean that the PS5 has now outsold the Game Boy Advance, and perhaps more importantly, the Xbox 360.
More importantly, now that the 360 is here, the PS5 has outsold every Xbox console ever made. The Xbox 360 was the pinnacle of Xbox hardware and a fairly successful console for the studio. It has sold about 30 million more units than its closest internal competitor, and the Xbox Series
The PS5 still has four more PlayStations to catch up with.
The 360 is also the closest Xbox has come to winning in console sales alone in a generation, coming in at less than 4 million units behind the PS3. That being said, the PS5 hasn't outsold the PS3 yet, but it seems very likely that sales will increase three months from now. The latest PlayStation has 3.2 million units left, and the PS5 is still selling well five years after its launch, and with this quarter including holiday sales, it looks almost certain to surpass the PS3 by early 2026.
Of course, overtaking the GBA's sales is impressive, but it will be a while before the PS5 overtakes other Nintendo consoles. In fact, besides the PS3, the PS5 now has a gap to fill before it can continue to climb the best-selling console rankings. After the PS3, which ended with console sales of 87.4 million units, we have the top seven all selling over 100 million units.
Every PlayStation home console except the PS3 has sold over 100 million consoles, so you have to imagine that Sony's minimum goal is for the PS5 to eventually reach that milestone. The PS5 is currently tracking at around 2 million consoles, following in the footsteps of the PS4, which sold over 86 million consoles by its fifth birthday. Since the PS4 sold 117.2 million consoles, it's very likely that the PS5 will eventually sell a comfortable 100 million units.
Even though the PS5 has now surpassed the GBA's overall sales, Nintendo will be relieved that PlayStation hasn't found more PS2 sales behind the sofa. Nintendo updated its own sales figures last week, revealing that the Switch has now sold 154.1 million consoles and counting. When it started to look like the Switch would outsell the PS2, PlayStation added $5 million to its final sales total, bringing it from $155 million to $160 million.
