Final Fantasy 9 may be on ice, and it's unclear if Square Enix will revive it

Things aren't looking good for the rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake, as reputable leaker NateTheHate suggests the project could be permanently shelved.

“I’m assuming the game is on ice and you never know. [Square Enix] “Will I come back or not?” he posted on X, responding to a fan who asked for an update on the project.

The remake was first mentioned four years ago during the infamous Nvidia GeForce Now breach. At the time, the tech giant was desperately trying to stop one of the biggest leaks of gaming, insisting that the game's listing was just a “speculation” and should not be taken as confirmation of the game's existence.

But quite a bit has come to fruition, including Helldivers 2, the Resident Evil 4 remake, the GTA remaster trilogy, and PC ports of PlayStation exclusive games like God of War and Returnal.

Looking specifically at Square Enix, not only was a Final Fantasy 9 remake discovered among the supposedly 'speculated' games, but there was also a Final Fantasy Tactics remake that was just released last month. At one point, Square Enix was at least considering bringing back one of its most cherished classics, but for whatever reason, things appear to have fallen apart behind the scenes.

Earlier this year, in July, NateTheHate claimed that the Final Fantasy 9 remake was still in development but was “in trouble” and might even be “canceled.” They stressed that there was only a “single source” for the cancellation claims and that further investigation was needed, but months later they are again saying the project may have been put on hold and development may not resume. Almost uninspiring confidence.

So, going forward, it may be worth lowering your expectations. Many have taken the various anniversary events, merchandise releases, and FF14 crossovers as evidence that Square Enix is teasing them. what It does have something to do with the Final Fantasy 9 Remake, but if these leaks are anything to go by – it doesn't look like we'll be heading back to Gaia any time soon, even though there have been reports that the 2024 remake is “very far” in development.
