PlayStation Plus was a subscription service that gave you a few free games each month and access to online features for other titles. Looking to come up with something that looks more like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation is shaking things up in 2022 and introducing a tiered PS Plus system. You now have three options to choose from: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Each tier costs more than the previous tier, but paying more gives you access to more features and a larger library of games.
A guide to all the free games currently available
From traditional console subscriptions to mobile services and PC services, all the free video games are here. Because free is good.
Essential is the same as the existing PS Plus. This is the cheapest option as you can play online and get a few free games every month. Extra offers even more benefits by opening up a library of PS4 and PS5 games that you can download and play for a subscription price. Last but not least is Premium, which includes everything you get with Extra and access to PlayStation's library of classics, as well as demos for a variety of new games. New games are added to each tier each month, and below you'll find the games you can get throughout October, regardless of which tier you're subscribed to, along with links to where you can upgrade your subscription, or sign up if you don't currently have PS Plus.

Every month, PlayStation offers at least three games that PS Plus subscribers can claim and keep. This is true even if you only subscribe to Essential, the cheapest of the three tiers. You can only claim a game for one month, but you can continue to play it and it will remain in your library as long as your PS Plus Essential subscription is active.
There's always a headliner among the games available through Essential each month, and October's headliner is obviously Alan Wake 2. The Remedy sequel, which was a Game of the Year contender when it launched in 2023, received praise for just about every aspect of it, including its look, feel, and gameplay. If you played the original and missed the sequel, you'll soon be rewarded as it will be available for purchase through Essential starting October 7.
PlayStation does a great job of creating a variety of must-have options each month, and nothing shows that better than the two games joining Alan Wake 2 this month. Goat Simulator 3 is about as far away from Alan Wake 2 as you can get. Add the fantastic puzzle game Cocoon to the mix, and you've got three very different games coming to PS Plus' cheapest tier this October.

Upgrading your PS Plus subscription from Essential to Extra grants you access to a library of PS4 and PS5 games in addition to the free games each month. The library is added every month, and while October's offerings may feel a little smaller than usual, the celebrity additions more than make up for it.
The biggest of them all is Silent Hill 2 Remake. It's been a year since Bloober's famous remake was released exclusively on PS5. In case you missed it or have been playing Silent Hill f and want more of the series in your life, you can play this game on PS Plus Extra starting October 21st. If you're looking for a spooky game to play this Halloween, the Until Dawn remake is also set to join the ranks.
If you're not into scary games, Yakuza: Like A Dragon is also out on Extra. As the seventh game in the series, it's the perfect starting point if you've never played a Yakuza game before but are scared to go back to the beginning. V Rising, Wizard With A Gun, and everything else joining those titles in this month's Extra are listed above.

The highest tier of PlayStation Plus is Premium. Premium subscribers not only receive free games every month and access to the Extra library, but they also have a growing collection of classic games to choose from. There are some exciting games coming soon, as well as games from PlayStation history that were first released before the PS4 launched.
Premium add-ons have slowed down to just one classic game per month, but the next step is a release to the classic library on October 21st. tekken 3. A fighting game that many consider not only the best in Tekken history, but also one of the best PS1 games of all time, regardless of genre.
That's all you'll get in October's Premium, but we know there will be more combat features coming in the near future. PlayStation revealed in its most recent State of Play that Soul Calibur 3 will soon be added to the top tier of PS Plus. We'll also eventually get a Tomb Raider Anniversary. I'm assuming it will be a premium November and December game.

PS Plus' Extra and Premium libraries aren't just an endless pit with new games added every month until there are more games in the library than a single person can play in a lifetime. Games are being released every month, and the good news for October this year is that only six titles are being released. Battlefield 1 is the biggest game, and it will likely still go out of its way to convince you to pick up Battlefield 6. Several Dark Pictures Anthology titles are set to leave PS Plus on October 21, along with three other games.
