George RR Martin can't do anything without being asked about Winds of Winter. The author has been working on the book for about 15 years, and it has disappointed fans of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire. The pressure was on after the HBO show's lackluster series finale, and fans were hoping this book would give them some closure.
Whenever Martin works on a different project or even speaks on a panel, he's inundated with questions about the book's progress. One fan crossed the line to the point where he publicly asked if another writer would take his place if he passed away. Martin spoke about the delay at New York Comic Con, saying he hates missing deadlines.
George RR Martin has always struggled with deadlines.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly (via IGN), Martin spoke about how disappointing the delay was. “I know there’s controversy about the Winds of Winter and how late it is, but we’ve always had a hard time with deadlines,” he said. “And I’m not happy about breaking contracts, missing deadlines, etc.”
The delay has undoubtedly put a lot of pressure on the author and led some to question his every move. Martin recently revealed that he is working on 'A Dozen Tough Jobs', an animated film based on the 12 Labors of Hercules. Before that, he worked on the story for Elden Ring and also helped with House of the Dragon. Fans of the book seem annoyed that Martin paid attention to anything other than Winds of Winter.
“Every time something like that happens, I announce it on my website and half the internet goes crazy,” Martin said. “'Why is George R.R. Martin writing something else like this when he should be writing Winds of Winter? What is he doing?' And I want to say, 'I did it in 1993.' Come on! It was in my drawer and I sold it to them because they wanted it!'”
