Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdellati met with his Egyptian counterpart Hussein Awad on Tuesday and pledged Egypt's continued support for Sudan's stability and security.

Abdelati said Egypt would do its best to help “our Sudanese brothers” overcome the political, security and humanitarian difficulties caused by the ongoing war in the country.

He highlighted the outcomes of a meeting held in Cairo on July 6 and 7 attended by Sudanese political and civil society groups, the most important of which he said was the recognition of the need to preserve state institutions, provide relief goods and humanitarian assistance to Sudan and neighbouring countries, and ensure ownership of the political process for the Sudanese people.

He also reviewed the progress of Egypt’s development projects in Sudan and assured Egypt of its continued commitment to these initiatives and to respond to the country’s humanitarian needs.

Abdelati stressed the critical need for donor countries and agencies to swiftly implement commitments made at conferences in Geneva and Paris in June 2023 and April 2024 respectively, including support for Sudan and neighbouring countries hosting Sudanese refugees, support for UN humanitarian response plans in those countries, and help to fill existing financing gaps.

He also discussed with Awad the regional initiatives that are helping to resolve the crisis in Sudan and the important and central role that neighboring countries, especially Egypt, are playing. According to Abdelati, Egypt is working to support Sudan at this critical time.

Other topics of discussion included ways to strengthen broader bilateral relations and cooperation between the countries, regional issues of mutual interest such as the situation in the Horn of Africa, the war in the Gaza Strip, security in the Red Sea, Libya, the Sahel and Sahara regions, and Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile in Sudan and upstream Egypt.

Awad thanked the Egyptian government for the facilities and services it has provided to the Sudanese people since the start of the crisis in their country.
