Matthew SUSSMAN Interview, an Ideator behind MEOWTH's voice

In the mid -90s, actor Matthew Sussman auditioned a variety of roles in a small Japanese animation and eventually cast as a cat. The animation will be Pokemon, the world's highest profitable media franchise.

“I would have been completely out of my heart if I thought it was more than a momentary popularity for children. It didn't happen to me, ”SUSSMAN says. “As long as it lasts at the level, it lasts. The only thing I can do at this point is that I am grateful and joy for the fact that I meet people who have many meaningful people. ”

Pokemon's early days and MeOWTH concepts

SUSSMAN said, “It was really fun. “From a long time ago, memories are good, but it may not be as clear as what I did at once. I remember starting it, auditioning, and participating. People were great. At that point we didn't know that we would be such a big phenomenon, and we had not been a lot of fun about it because it was not for decades. ”

There is a reason why SUSSMAN remembers the audition stage. He is a variety of characters as well as auditions about Meowth's role.

SUSSMAN said, “I was reading many different parts. “I read almost all male voices. And we didn't have a video. We almost explained the binder, which was filled with the picture of the character, the explanation of what they did, and what they did. Therefore, recording will try to adjust the voice to test the audition, and each image will be different. ”

Susman's symbolic MEOWTH was born during the audition period, and the rest is history.

“I have to be entirely credit for MEOWTH's voice,” he said. “I see this personality and describe it as part of a group of antagonists, but it is harmless. And this character thinks he is a hard person, but he is just this little cat. He is very original but attractive in a good way.

“So I just came up with ideas in my head. 'Okay, he may be one of the old gangster characters of the old movie because he thinks he's hard.' And I said, 'I like it, but he was also bizarre and easily harassed.' Then he always thought of Jerry Lewis, who always made this infant voice. I had a job to work together and was trying to do it. ”

After having an idea on his head, Susman was entering the reading room.

“I read for the producer and say, 'I will try a little crazy. And if you don't like it, just tell me, you will change it to something else. ”Susman recalls. Thankfully they didn't hate it and Meowth's voice was born.

It wasn't until he realized that Susman realized that he was talking about Pokemon, the only speaking Pokemon at that point.

“In fact, for a while, I didn't know Meowth was the only Pokemon,” he says. “And as we are doing, especially when they are included in the story, it became clear. But I have fun because I had to do a lot of crazy good. And everyone else made a small sound. ”

SUSSMAN started from the show

SUSSMAN was part of a total of 37 episodes, despite being recognized as making one of the most symbolic voices of Pokemon. He was “the essence of business.”

SUSSMAN said, “I was a stage actor and movie star. “And this came from the situation. I was really enjoying it, and of course I would like to stay. But I participated in a play that could not be refused. It was a great stage opportunity. But it meant that I had to go to Chicago for three months. ”

In today's era, this would not have been a trouble of death, but in 1998, the situation was different.

“It would have been a big budget to have a remote recording session at that time. It is not the same as the Internet now. ” “So they told me, 'We'll have to fill others for you for several months outside the village.”

At first, SUSSMAN expects his departure to start temporarily, but not like the show business.

“Then came back and the producers said, 'We love you. We want to do something else, but now we don't want to switch again because others are voice. And we don't want to confuse the children. ” But even in truth, the other actor was instructed to follow a kind of template based on my creation. So I thought it was a little excuse, not to switch again. In other words, it is the essence of becoming an actor. ”

SUSSMAN returned to the show with a variety of small roles, including Slowking's voice in Pokemon: The Movie 2000, but could not return to the voice of Meowth.
