In shonen animation, the protagonist and supporting characters are in charge. While a great premise certainly plays a big part in making a series popular, developing characters that readers and viewers can root for and watch is essential. Over the years, we've created a variety of amazing shonen characters, many of which have become some of the most recognizable anime characters.
Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Ichigo, etc. all enjoy a certain level of notoriety. But looking at the new generation, which characters from the modern series actually stand out as most iconic? This group of boy characters have made a name for themselves over the past decade or so.
Senku Ishigami – Dr. Stone
Many of the typical shonen protagonists can be a bit slow in all aspects other than combat, but Senku breaks away from this trope. Instead, he is a mentally tough genius who frequently solves problems with his quick thinking and resourcefulness.
Senku is a great character to root for, offering a fresh take on the shonen protagonist archetype we're less familiar with, but it's nice to see him regardless. He's a fun character to root for, and like many before him, he's a big reason why his series has become so popular.
Denji – Chainsaw Man
Chainsaw Man I think I will end this year on a good note. With the continued success of the new Reze Arc movie, the future seems bright for the series. But before the anime adaptation and hit movie, the series' biggest draw was its lovable protagonist.
Denji is an easy character to root for because he grew up poor. He's a bit naive and not always the fastest in the draw, but he's a good-natured guy who just wants to succeed.
Eren Jaeger – Attack on Titan
Aside from being one of the most recognizable anime characters in recent memory, Eren is also one of the most controversial. Eren starts off as a very sympathetic character at the beginning. attack on titanAnd while he keeps it that way for most of the series, he definitely gets his detractors by the time all is said and done.
Still, he's an interesting character that fans won't soon forget. Although sometimes impatient and blunt, Eren truly cares for those closest to him and always does his best to overcome any difficulties he faces. All the discourse surrounding him and his actions only proves that he is one of the best-written characters of his generation, and you can be sure that people will still be talking about Eren decades later.
Gojo Satoru – Jujutsu Haesen
On the other hand, Yuji Itadori Doing Jujutsu As a traditional “protagonist,” Gojo has certainly had a bigger impact on the anime community. He is the most recognizable character in the series and it is no exaggeration to say that he is one of the most recognizable characters of his generation.
It's not hard to see why Gozo is so popular. He's a great character with some incredibly memorable moments that stay with you. He's more than just a typical overpowered character, and fans have come to care for and root for him over the course of the series.
Tanjiro Kamado – Demon Slayer
that demon slayer The world cannot forgive. Many characters have suffered at the hands of demons or society at large and are traumatized by it. However, the series' protagonist, Tanjiro, remains a sympathetic and sane person despite all the tragedy surrounding him.
Tanjiro's relationship with his sister Nezuko is a big part of why fans love him so much. The Kamado siblings' bond is at the heart of the series, showing how kind and caring they are not only to each other, but to those around them.
Deku
A common trope for boy protagonists is that they must strive to become stronger, go through all kinds of trials, and overcome hardships to become the best version of themselves. Deku's Journey My Hero Academia It wasn't any different, but Deku's quirkiness early on in the series made him seem like a much more relatable and approachable character.
Deku works hard to gradually master One For All, breaking out of his shell and becoming more comfortable with himself and those around him in the process. Although he may not seem like the toughest shonen protagonist at times, he is a great character who has captured the hearts of anime fans all over the world.
Jinwoo Seong
There may be no greater animation than this. solo leveling Right now. Fans are eagerly awaiting season 3 of the anime, but the impact of the first two seasons cannot be underestimated. And the main reason why this series quickly became popular is the main character.
Seong Jin-woo is a fairly introverted character who is not as stubborn as other boy protagonists. He is always trying to become stronger and is shown to be kind and caring. Some may find him a bit boring, but Sung Jin-Woo keeps things interesting with his solo leveling and has been some of the best anime moments of the past decade.
