There's a reason why tropes continue to be utilized in modern storytelling, and it's because fans absolutely love them. These are tried and tested story beats, but they're not always perfect. The power of friendship is an overused trope, especially in many shonen series. Admittedly, fans have more than their fill, but that's not really the case. one piece. In other series, the trope is utilized by characters gaining deus ex machina-like powers through things like a friend's faith. Friendship, or more lovingly called nakama, plays an important role in friendship. one pieceUse this to deepen character bonds or advance the plot.
Before the time skip, Luffy and his friends ruined the powerful Arlong Pirates by cleverly manipulating Nami. They also literally destroyed Enies Lobby, one of the Marines' most powerful strongholds, in an attempt to retrieve Robin. After the timeskip, they did the same to the Emperor's territory to save Sanji. Despite the increased power the Straw Hats faced, none of their victories felt forced or impossible. They escape all danger through grit, trust, and a deep desire to save their friends from imminent danger.
dream big
In the world of shonen anime and manga, it's not uncommon for protagonists with big dreams to fall into the bucket. When the series begins, that dream may seem truly unattainable. in one pieceBig dreams aren't just an accessory to make the protagonist interesting. It is literally the driving force of the story. The reason the Pirate King era began is because many hopefuls dreamed of finding legendary treasures and taking on the title of Pirate King.

Moreover, the big dream also makes the series colorful. Each of the Straw Hat Pirates has their own goals, and each one is very different. Some characters are relationship-oriented, like Usopp and Brook, while others are more political, like Robin and Jinbe. Some characters are more individual, like Franky, Nami, and Sanji, while others are classic characters like Zoro or Luffy, who just want to be the best at what they do.
A stupid but kind-hearted protagonist
Luffy can basically be described in two words: stupid and kind. Naturally, these traits are shared with many other shonen protagonists, including Goku, Naruto, Natsu, and Gon. Luffy doesn't have the ability to think of complex plans or grasp concepts that are even remotely difficult. But interestingly enough, his simplicity also allowed him to come up with the most absurdly brilliant ideas. Back to the fight with Arlong, he took the fishman's tooth and used it on him. Since Arlong was biting the rock pillar, Luffy thought he could use Arlong's teeth to pierce Arlong's skin. But it can be quite effective. It was he who had the idea to effectively anger the Emperor by hiding a bunch of fake Luffy inside Big Mom's cake during the Whole Cake Island Arc.
Plus, Luffy's stupidity goes well with how kind he is. He doesn't like things to be complicated, so he jumps into action. Since the Straw Hats were the first in the Sabaody Archipelago when the Celestial Dragon shot Hachi, he went to St. I hit Carlos. Likewise, he literally jumped into the world's worst prison and entered into a full-scale war to save his brother. So, no matter how stupid Luffy looks, he is still a character that is hard to hate.
fierce competition
Character rivalry is a trope as old as time. It is a frequently used trope in shonen anime, but is also used in other media. Ultimately, this is a great way to promote character development while also increasing interest. in one pieceCompetition isn't always very simple. Of course, there is a deep-rooted rivalry between Sanji and Zoro that is reminiscent of other boy rivalries. but, one piece It also uses much more ambiguous or subtle competing relationships. For example, there is the rivalry between Blackbeard and Luffy. The two started in Mocktown, where they couldn't even agree on whether the drink was good. Although the two have not yet competed in earnest, they are increasing their notoriety side by side.
There's also a fun rivalry between Kid, Law, and Luffy. The three don't seem to agree on anything. Each does not allow the other two to keep up with them in everything. It could be argued that Smoker and Luffy have a similar rivalry to Garp and Roger, but Smoker has yet to catch up to Luffy in terms of strength.
Powerful Elder Character
Shonen anime absolutely loves old men. They often appear as the strongest characters in their poems, proving that with age comes great strength. one piece This is one of those series that doesn't ignore the elderly. Regardless of faction, there is at least one powerful Elder. On the World Government side, there are obviously five Elders. There are also powerful old-school timers like Garp and Sengoku. On the pirate side, there is clearly the powerful Whitebeard, who was once called the strongest pirate. Even Rayleigh, Crocus, and Scoffer Gavan, who are well past their prime, are still powerful warriors in their own right. Other special mentions include Chopper's adoptive mother, Dr. There's Clou D. Clover from Kureha and Ohara.
one piece It's not that these characters continue to accumulate power. They remain powerful even in old age, but that doesn't mean they have defied biology. Most of them are weakened compared to their prime. Who they are now simply respects what they've been through.
