Demon Slayer: Best Episodes of Each Issue, Ranked
Demon Slayer is comprised of iconic and memorable story arcs, each with a single episode that stands out above the rest.
Tanjiro VS Spider Demon (Father)
Fans remember the Mount Natagumo Arc as the place where Tanjiro was first exposed to the threat of the Twelve Kizuki. But before his epic battle with Louis, he met various members of the spider family. In episode 18, the Spider Demon King appeared in front of Tanjiro and Inosuke as a powerful enemy. While trying to stop the towering demon, Tanjiro is thrown into the sky and suffers a disastrous landing despite using his second form to lessen the impact. However, in the comics, he successfully accomplishes the same task and lands gracefully and safely.
This minor detail may seem trivial, but it is important when considering the upcoming battle with Louis. The animation makes him seem quite inexperienced and vulnerable in the moments before he meets Louis. However, the cartoon shows his mastery of breathing techniques. Although he is still a beginner, Tanjiro's rigorous training ensures that he will be prepared for the challenges ahead. This addition also makes his “victory” over Rui much more acceptable.
The deeper repercussions of Rengoku's death
The first episode of the Entertainment District Arc is a direct sequel to the tragic events of the Mugen Train Arc. Before Rengoku passed away, he asked Tanjiro to convey his last words to his family. Naturally, Tanjiro was shaken by his colleague's death, but he also took on the responsibility of granting Rengoku's final wish. The episode begins with the disappearance of Tanjiro, who is already on his way to fulfill Rengoku's last wish. He is shown working his way up despite his injuries. He also has his well-being questioned by Senjuro due to the pale expression on his face.
Tanjiro's pain over Rengkou's death is clearly shown in the anime, but is shown in a better way in the manga. Unlike animation, this scene also implies a sense of urgency and nervousness in the cartoon. Tanjiro hurriedly left the room without even getting out of bed, showing the moment when he was completely immersed in Rengoku's pass and skipped what he normally did. Additionally, upon arriving at Rengoku's house, he appears much more exhausted, suggesting that he probably ran exhausted along the way. This small addition makes this scene even more impressive in the comics.
Tanjiro’s presence left an even stronger impression.
The rehabilitation training episode introduced Tanjiro to the members of the Butterfly Mansion, and Tanjiro left a deep impression. This sentiment is prevalent in both manga and anime. However, in the manga, Kiyo, Sumi, and Naho are shown not only congratulating Tanjiro on all his achievements, but also crying with joy. When he successfully cracks the gourd after receiving continued support from a trio of young assistants, they cry for the first time. As Tanjiro and his companions said goodbye, they cried once again.
This is also true in the case of Kanao. In the anime, she is dazzled after her conversation with Tanjiro. However, not only is she dazzling in the cartoon, she goes on a trip and shows a shy, yet human side that was not seen in the animation. This scene highlights Tanjiro's ability to truly bond with people through kindness. Kanao's additional moment also marks the beginning of her love affair with Tanjiro.
Zenitsu's affection for Nezuko is more clearly revealed.
In the Rehabilitation Training episode of Season 1, Episode 25, the anime shows the trio of Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu doing their best to become stronger for their upcoming mission. Tanjiro and Inosuke also repair their damaged swords during the Battle of Mount Natagumo. While Inosuke cuts off his newly delivered sword, Tanjiro restrains an angry Kanamori, giving fans a memorable comedic scene. However, in this confusion, the animation skips scenes that viewers wanted to see.
In the manga, Zenitsu is seen talking to the boxy Nezuko. He holds flowers and happily talks to Nezuko about his daily life. He talks about his colleagues and expresses his respect for Tanjiro. He also promises to take her to a place where flowers bloom. Nezuko is seen reacting by scratching the box. It's unclear whether her reaction was positive or negative. This small but cute scene highlights Zenitsu's affection for Nezuko, which continues to grow later in the season.
How Demon Slayer Humanized Demons
Demon Slayer's antagonist may be evil, but the series always does an excellent job of humanizing its villains.
Adding moments like these could definitely improve the Demon Slayer series. But that doesn't take away from the fact that it's still one of the most iconic and ongoing anime.
Demon Slayer is available on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
